A mysterious, mutated heiress to a massive fortune, Virginia inSons Of The Forestis an odd and sympathetic character. First encountered in the wild and usually early on in the game, she can be quite unsettling to see sprinting through the brush and leaping over tall boulders.
This multi-limbed mystery will keep her distance at first, but eventually, she can become a companion like Kelvin to help out in the wilderness. Virginia is a competent NPC friend and though her backstory isn’t immediately clear there’s still plenty you can piece together.

Updated June 19, 2025 By Matthew Mckeown:A strange yet enchanting multi-limbed mute that can be recruited to your team,Virginiais an interesting yet tragic character in Sons Of The Forest, and the way future updates are adding things to the game andVirginiaherself, it looks like things are about to get a lot darker.
As an example, there was the addition of the Old Virginia model, which gave everyone’s favorite gal a more Cronenberg-esque makeover. Suggesting that there could be more backstory aboutVirginia thathasn’t been seen yet or more information fleshing out the events on the island or the experiments involving The Cube at the heart of it all. In the meantime here’s a refresher onVirginiain Sons Of The Forest.

Who Is Virginia?
Extra limbs aside for a moment, Virginia is theadult daughter of the esteemed Puffton family, the same family that owns the island filled withdeadly mutationsthat you find yourself unfortunately stuck on. Virginia isaround 20 years old,and from what’s seen in the game it seems she has apassion for Ballet.
Regularly doted on by her father, according to logs it seems Virginia is alsothe heir to her father’s fortune. The entire Puffton estate was left to Virginia by her father Edward. This fact, of course, riled up her mother Barbara who, as an active socialite had hoped the money would be going to her.

You can probably guess thatthings go horribly wrong for the Puffton family, and rightly so.
Virginia’s Connection To The Island
Though her backstory has the potential to be filled out in future updates, what we can piece together about Virginia (at the time of writing) is pretty interesting. The most pressing question is whether she came to the island with her parents and mutated at some point, or if she was a victim of lab experiments using the Golden Cube.
There is certainly evidence of her being potentially artificial. Her resemblance to the other multi-limbed mutants but without the feral side and the fact that she hasa bunker bedroom. It’s unclear if she was ever allowed out, but there isVIP Keycardwith her face and name on it can be found that allows access to the various underground bunkers sporadically placed around the island. So it seems she hadsome modicum of free reinat least.

A set ofballet shoes found in the bunkersuggest that at some point she had two legs. So this could be something sentimental from before she mutated after the Golden Cube activated or if it was put there by a sympathetic researcher watching through the two-way mirror in her quarters.
The mirror is the sticking point; without it, the room is just a normal bedroom, but with one it gives the impression of anObservation Room. But whether this was built into the room after her change as a way to monitor her mutations in a safe environment or made especially to watch her like a lab rat when she was first ‘created’ is still unknown.

Unfortunately, the developers like to change things around a lot, so this could be filled in later or left to the void like the unanswered questions in their previous Forest game.
With the addition of the Old Virginia Mutant model, perhapsthe mutation that plagues Virginia was always supposed to get worse.

Virginia As A Companion
Virginia first appears when you arrive on the island, and though she isn’t arecruitable companionat first, over time, she’ll warm up to her new neighbors if you do things thatincrease her affinity.
These range from the fairly mundane to the challenging depending on what’s going on. For example, killing an enemy that she points to, igniting a fire that she’s standing next to, helping her when she’s under attack orwatching her ballet dance, and generally not wielding a weapon when standing near her.
Virginia can be very skittish, especially in the early game, so it may take quite a bit of trial and error to get her to come close. But be persistent, she’s a worthwhile and very useful companion.
Virginia also tends to hang around warm areas of the map and will avoid heading close to the mountains and their fields of snow. There’s no onscreen meter denoting how much her affinity has risen, but as she starts to warm up to your presence, herbehavior will start to change. Virginia will appear more frequently, eventually bringing gifts like berries and fish, hanging out around your fire as well as adorably giving a multi-armed thumbs-up when she’s hanging around.
Virginia’s Got A Gun
Unlike your other companion Kelvin, however,Virginia can’t be given orders, but she can be armed with a Shotgun and a handgun that she’ll happily duel wield once her affinity is high enough.
However, Virginia has to be essentiallytaught how to fightby being brought next to aggressive mutants. She’ll be timid at first, but over time Virginia will eventually wander infiring off two or three weapons at oncedepending on what she’s been armed with.
Try not to give her anything explosive or incendiary asVirginia has a habit of causing chaos with accidental friendly fire.
Virginia can also be given outfits to provide extra armor or other clothes that were made specifically for her and left in special areas around the island. Once they’re collected, they can be used to customize your campmate.
Warning: Spoilers For Sons Of The Forest Finale Below.
The Final Fate Of Virginia
As the story for Sons Of The Forest plays out Virginia’s fate remains firmly in the hands of your homemade rescue team. If she doesn’t join the crew that heads to the Golden Cube, shewon’t surviveand leave the island with you in the finale. This also applies if Virginia or any other character permanently dies at any point before the end of the game.
However, if she joins the Scooby Gang inside the special sparkly square, she’llemerge unharmedalong with you and Kelvin or whoever else was brought along at the end. Then, when the rescue chopper is called in, Virginia is seen leaving the island willingly, along with you and anyone else in the party, which ties the story off in a neat little bow.
If you choose to stay, on the other hand,Virginia will also continue to follow youaround as normal along with whoever else was on your team when the decision is made.
