Your first visit to Kaer Morhen inThe Witcher 3is a valuable opportunity for you to pick up equipment that will prove invaluable against the Wild Hunt. The valley hides old weapon diagrams, caches of alchemical supplies, and even a piece of Mastercrafted Wolven Armor.

The latter is found through the quest, The Witchers' Forge, which takes place in an abandoned iron mine near the fortress. It’s particularly easy to miss if you haven’t searched every nook and cranny in the area. This guide will help you find the note that starts the quest and with finishing it in one piece.

How To Start The Witchers' Forge

You will need tofind and read Monstrum, or a Portrayal of Witchers. Volume 2.It’s a document hidden in a chestin Kaer Morhen’s southeast tower,connected to the kitchen.

While the contents are nonsense, a note scribbled in a margin claimsthat the book is a key to something in the iron mines.Without any further details, the only thing to do istovisit the nearby mine.

Exploring The Iron Mine

The mine is a short distancesouthwest of Kaer Morhen,across the river. Though it appears like an ordinary cave, it has an unusual resident;an earth elementalthat will immediately attempt to kill you.

The earth elemental isa slow-attacking monsterthat hasiron-hard skin, making it a lumbering foe that can weather even your strongest attacks. You can useElementa Oilon your sword to deal more damage to it.A Dimeritium Bombwillreduce its damage resistance,making it that much easier to kill.

After killing the monster,look for a pedestal in the cave.It has the diagram forSuperior Wolf Gauntletsand is also the lock that the book is meant for. Geralt will place Monstrum on the pedestal, opening another section.

Entering The Forge

Walk through the newly-opened tunnel to reach the final area, a forge hidden within the mine. you may findsome loot in the containers around the forge,though the real prize comes afterinteracting with the bellows by the fire.

Doing so willawaken a fire elementalthat will demand you to leave the forge. The conversation will end withthe elemental trying to remove you with force.You will have tokill the elementalfor your own safety.

The fire elemental is, unfortunately, on fire. Being inclose proximity to it is inadvisablebecause of the heat coming from the monster.Extinguishing its flameswithAardor by throwing aNorthern Wind bombat it will remove this danger.

This should go without saying butdo not, under any circumstances, use Igni on it.The sign willmake the elemental stronger.

With the threat removed,return to the forgeand walk tothe wall behind it.Geralt will use theEye of Nehalenito dispel the wall, letting you help yourself to a set of chests that includevaluable armorand theMastercrafted Wolven armor.
