The once great School of the Wolf began its decline over a century before the start ofThe Witcher 3,where Kaer Morhen was stormed by an angry mob that killed all witchers present. It’s an event that lingers in the remaining witchers' collective consciousness but is not something that they frequently discuss.

Though the fortress has been restored to some extent over the years, much of the valley remains in disrepair. A notable example would be the bastion west of Kaer Morhen which has been haunted by wraiths. Geralt will need to lay the angry spirits to rest to finish the side quest, The Bastion.
Where To Start The Bastion
This quest starts at the ruinswest of Kaer Morhen, after entering it and coming face-to-face with its ghostly residents. The first objective, killing the specters, will begin immediately after you enter.
Geralt will decide to investigate further after you kill the monsters, starting the next stage of the quest.

There arefive locations in the bastionwhere you can findechoes of the past.Use Keira Metz’smagic lampon the echoes to view small snapshots ofa young boy’s trainingin the bastion as well as his demise. It functions identically to the echoes fromA Towerful of Mice.
It’s best todo this part at night, when the green motes that accompany an echo are easier to see.

The first isin the main courtyard, next to the main gate. It is on a patch of grass next tothe stables.
The second ison the raised courtyard, overlooking the main courtyard.
The third is in a roomon the raised courtyard, against the south wall.
The fourth iswest of the ladder in the raised courtyard, out in the open.

The fifth and final one ison the wall.Go to the ladder on thenorth wall of the raised platformand climb up. Travel north, until you finda skeleton impaled by pitchforksin a tower. This isthe only one you need to find.
