With so many games in the series, certain aspects of the story might slip through the cracks and leave you confused, like the Black Box.

There are plenty of mysterious, magical objects in Kingdom Hearts but none more than the Black Box. This item only appeared a handful of times throughout the series and its function and purpose remain a mystery. We analyze everything we know so far about the Black Box, who’s searching for it, and how it could impact the series moving forward.
What Is The Black Box?
Introduced in Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover, the Black Box is alarge black chest with 13 locks on it. The chest is large enough that it requires more than one person to lift it off the ground. Besides the locks, there is anemblem on the top of the boxwith an inscription that refers to the seven deadly sins. The locks and inscription symbolize the13 Darknesses and Seven Guardians of Light.
The darknesses refer to Organization 13, thedifferent vessels that Xehanort needed to recreatethe x-bladeand open Kingdom Hearts, while the Seven Guardians of Light were theKeyblade wielders destined to fight against the darkness. The main members of the guardians of light include Sora, Riku, Kairi, King Mickey, Aqua, Ventus, and Lea.
The Master of Masters owned the Black Boxand kept it safe for several centuries. After training the Foretellers and in preparation for the Keyblade War, the Master of Masters entrusted the chest toLuxu. He was hesitant to watch the box and asked the Master of Masters what it contained. The Master of Masters whispers something in Luxu’s ear and Luxu asks the Master why the Black Box contains that but the Master tells him to be patient.
Despite not fully understanding what the Master of Masters has planned with the Black Box, Luxu still agrees to keep the box safe. Because of the inscription and number of locks, we can speculate the box must contain something that couldturn the tide in the battle between Light and Darkness.
Searching For The Black Box
From the end of the Keyblade War with the Foretellers until the events ofKingdom Hearts 3, Luxu kept the Black Box hidden in an unknown place. Even when Luxutransferred to different bodies, the box remained hidden, and he never mentioned its existence to anyone. It wasn’t until the next Keyblade War was imminent with Xehanort that Luxu (now Xigbar) revealed basic details about the Black Box.
Before the final confrontation in the Keyblade Graveyard, Xigbar informed the real Organization 13 of the existence of the Black Box but didn’t tell them what it contained. Secretly, Xigbar asked Luxord to retrieve the box while the rest of the organization went to the Keyblade Graveyard. Similar to the Master of Masters telling Luxu what was inside the box before agreeing to watch it, Xigbar also told Luxord something related to what the box contains.
Although the Master of Masters didn’t explain to Luxu who might be looking for the box or why he was hiding it, we know of at least one interested party. During Maleficent’s travels, she met someonedressed in a black coatwho spoke about the Black Box. They suggested that the box might contain a copy of theBook of Prophecies, the same item that the Master of Masters gifted the Foretellers that foretold coming events. Determined to find it, Maleficent and Pete searched various worlds for the Black Box while Sora was learning thepower of wakingbut were unable to find it.
Where Is The Black Box Now?
After the thrilling conclusion to the battle in the Keyblade Graveyard that resulted in Xehanort’s defeat, Xigbar reappears in the graveyard.He faked his deathfighting Sora and Riku and left the battle to retrieve the Black Box. He’s seendragging the Black Box back to the graveyardwith Xehanort’s discarded Keyblade and summons the Foretellers.
While Xigbar is speaking with the Foretellers,Maleficent and Peteare seen in the distance watching the group. With the Black Box now squarely in Maleficent’s sights, we expect the mysterious chest to appear in the future of the series as possibly a driving goal for Maleficent.
Tetsuya Nomura explained the future of the series will move to thenext saga calledThe Lost Master Arcwhich will dive into the Foretellers and the Master of Masters. Fans believe the Master of Masters went toQuadratum, a world of neither light nor dark, and with the trailer of Kingdom Hearts 4 revealing Quadratum, we could also see more about the Black Box
What Is In The Black Box?
When Sora speaks with Luxord in the Keyblade Graveyard, he tells Sora theBlack Box contains hopebut doesn’t elaborate much further. Xigbar also claims the boxholds secrets guarded by Keyblade wielders.
Based on these statements, we can speculate that the Black Box contains something that could help either side achieve its goals. If the information Maleficent received was true, the box containing a copy of the Book of Prophecies would beextremely powerful to have and could dictate the future.
There are several other theories about what’s inside the Black Box. OneKingdom Hearts forumsuggests the box containedthe heart of the Master of Masters, which might explain how he was able to travel through time, but he would still need to have appropriate vessels unless the Black Box also contained his body.
Or, because of how Nomura vaguely described the contents to this point,the Black Box could literally be anything he wants it to be. It seems that the description of what the Black Box contains was purposely vague to maintain the element of surprise as the series continues.
