Valheimmade waves when first released on the PC. Since then, gamers on different platforms have been waiting for the game to reach other devices. In March of 2023, this wish came true, as Valheim can now be played on the Xbox. Many games have differences between versions, but does this hold true for Valheim?

Before diving right into this console version of Valheim, let’s go over some of the differences between both versions of the game. Overall, there are not many, but if you are struggling to decide whether you want the console version or not, we are here to help.
6Content Differences
Content differences aren’t uncommon among different versions of games. TakeMinecraftfor example, with Java and Bedrock. Fortunately, this is not the case for Valheim. Regardless of if you are playing on PC or Xbox, there are no differences in the actual content of the game.
This means that information about the game online will apply to both versions; you will not have to seek out console-specific information or recipes. Additionally, patches and updates for the game will come to both PC and console at the same time. You will not have to wait a bit for the update to release on Xbox.

As Valheim is still in early access, this means that whennew biomesare added, console gamers can dive into the fun right away!
5Performance
Although the content is the same, this can’t be said for the performance. The heart of Valheim is the ability to play co-op. It’s encouraged to play with friends, and much of the content can be completed quicker with more than one person.

Unfortunately, the performance on Xbox can get quite laggy, especially if you are playing with a group of players. This lag and frame rate drop can be a hindrance when fighting off enemies, or if you are in any dangerous situation. While this may not be game-breaking, it can be a bit annoying at times.
4Graphics
In general, Valheim doesn’t have the most realistic graphics. The game has simple graphics that still manage to capture the Viking experience. On Xbox, you may see a dip in graphics quality from time to time. The world may not be as polished, especially if you tweak the settings to get better performance.
Again, this is not game-breaking, but it’s important to keep in mind if you have an older Xbox that might run as fast as the Xbox Series X|S. Shortly after Valheim came to console, a patch was released, and you may now choose “Balanced Mode” from the settings menu. This mode will support 40 FPS and 1440p on Series X and 900p on Series S.

3Game Pass
On PC, you can purchase Valheim on Steam. By doing this, you will own the game and receive any free updates when they occur. On console, you can currently purchase the game directly, or play it through Game Pass. This is an Xbox (Microsoft) service that requires a subscription butallows you to play any game on Game Pass.
If you know that you want to buy Valheim, then this information may not be the most helpful. If, on the other hand, you aren’t quite sure about Valheim, Game Pass is a good place to try it out. You can play a bit of Valheim and decide if you really like it or not. Fortunately, if Valheim turns out to not be the game for you, there are still tons of games on Game Pass that you can try out.

On Game Pass, Valheim is listed as “Game Preview”. Don’t let this worry you though; Game Preview on Game Pass is essentially just early access. The game is still in early access on Steam, but the term “early access” is just not used.
2Server Mods
A big question of many Valheim players involves mods. So, does Valheim for console support mods? The answer is yes and no.You will not be able to download mods for a server made on console, but you can still play on amodded server created on PC. On PC, mods are downloaded through Nexus Mods rather than a Steam Workshop.

With no official location of mods for Valheim, you will not be able to create a modded, console Valheim server. Don’t let this deter you though! Valheim provides hundreds of hours of vanilla enjoyment; no mods required.
1Crossplay
Lastly, let’s take a look at crossplay. Valheim for console released alongside the crossplay feature. This means thatif you are playing Valheim on Xbox, you will still be able to join a server with friends playing on PC.
Crossplay isn’t inherently activated on PC though. If you head to the server creation screen, you will see “Crossplay”. Clicking on this will enable the function, allowing gamers on both PC and console to join. If you are creating a server from your console, you don’t have to do this! Crossplay will already be active for every console-made server, so all you need to do is choose your server settings and start the game.
