The Adeptus, or Adepti, are a group of beings inGenshin Impactwho are contractually obliged to protect the city of Liyue from demons and other nefarious influences. Rex Lapis, otherwise known as Morax or Zhongli, is the leader of the Adeptus and the Geo Archon.

Another term for the Adepti is Illuminated Beast, referring to special and powerful beings blessed with myriad gifts and long life. Most of the illuminated beasts we meet in Genshin, such as Cloud Retainer and Mountain Shaper, are all Adepti who have signed contracts with Zhongli to protect the land.
Who Or What Are The Adepti?
The Adepti is the name of agroup that consists of powerful beings and Gods.Specifically, it refers to beings in the world of Genshin known asIlluminated Beasts. You don’t need to be an illuminated beast to be considered part of the Adepti, but most members of the group are illuminated beasts.
Within the context of Genshin, the term Adeptus is a catch-all, encompassing these special beings who havereached enlightenment due to their long lives, or by virtue of being gifted such powers from the Geo Archon.
Owing to this and the influence they have over the land, these Illuminated Beasts and other Adepti have taken on a deific status, often worshipped throughout Liyue as Gods.
It seems that the game distinguishes betweentwo types of Adeptus: some are illuminated beasts – this involves Cloud Retainer, Mountain Shaper, and so on – and those who have illuminated beast blood in their veins – sometimes known as Qilin – such as Ganyu. However, the gameclassifies both of these as Adepti. Gods, such as Morax the Geo Archon, are also included as Adepti.
As an aside, when Zhongli went by Morax, he was known as the leader of the Adepti,referred to as the Prime of Adepti.
Generally speaking, the Adepti all have different forms. By default, the illuminated beasts will take on theappearance of a majestic animal.
Gods, on the other hand, can have many different forms. Despite this, someAdepti are known to take on the appearance of a humanand walk among the common people in secret.
The game goes out of its way to draw attention to a small rift within the Adepti based on if they choose topresent themselves as their true formor take on a disguise of a human.
During the Archon quest where the Traveler meets Moon Carver, they note that they would never take on the form of a human because they areexceedingly proud of their illuminated beast form.
Within the context of the game, several beings are referred to as Adeptus.One such group is the Yaksha, which is a subsection of illuminated beasts, charged with hunting down demons and ripping evil out before it can spread.
Rex Lapis, otherwise known as Morax or Zhongli, is the leader of the group known as Adepti. This group was established long before the Archon War, and together theyformed a contract to protect Liyue from demons and other dangers.
History Of The Adepti And Rex Lapis
Currently, it is unknown how long the group known as Adepti has been established. Some of the notable illuminated beastsfought with Morax during the Archon War, which is explained through the game’s lore.
It stands to reason that Morax had already gifted power to these other beings and knew them long before the Archon War broke out.Seeing as how they were his trusted allies in the war,it would make sense that Morax knew them during the early stages of the world, befriending theseilluminated beasts or even granting them the powerto become illuminated beasts.
You might be aware that Liyue is known as theLand of Contracts, and this is directly referring to its inception of it as a location.
However they came to be, it seems likely that their alliance and group of Adepti was established long before the Archon War.
Morax bound the other Adepti within a contract to come to Liyue’s aidif it is beset by demons or other evil forces. The location where this happened is said to be where Liyue Harbour now stands, and the Adeptus have honoured their contract throughout the years.
The Yaksha Adepti And Morax
It also appears that since the forging of this contract,all the Adeptus have been charged with hunting demons and removing them from Liyue. During the Archon War, Morax came across a group of illuminated beasts known asthe Yaksha.
Any Xiao fan will know theYaksha are a race of demon hunterstasked with fighting some of the nastiest creations that came from the Archon War. They must battle the desires of fallen Gods that have twisted into corruption, spreading plagues and chaos across the land.
The Yaksha are a prime example of having the void stare back at you if you stare at it too long.
According to the game, theYaksha was cursed by their duty,staining them with blood and corrupting them over time thanks to what they had to do.
This curse drove most Yaksha mador caused them to become feral and have to be put down. This eventually happens to all butone final Yaksha, the one known as Alatus.Alatus, as you may know, has forsaken his Yaksha form and travels the world as a demon-hunter named Xiao.
The Traveler Arrives In Liyue
By the time our Traveler makes it to Liyue, roughly2,000 years have passed since the Archon War. All of the illuminated beasts and other Adepti have secluded themselves from society and Morax has forsaken his true form, instead choosing to live asa mortal man who goes by the name Zhongli.
While they are secluded from society, they still hold sway over Liyue and effectively pull strings from the shadows. Not all Adepti went into isolation,some of them stayed in Liyue to live as humans. One such person is Madame Ping and, to a certain extent, Ganyu.
With theAdepti seemingly vanishing from the land, a new form of governing was needed for Liyue.
To govern the land, an establishment known as theLiyue Qixing was formed to leadthe land forward in this new age.
During the Archon Quests, the Traveler is tasked with gaining the favour of thesecluded Adepti to help Liyueand have them honour their years-old contract to defend the land from demons.
They all band together to defeat Osial, a fallen God previously imprisoned by Rex Lapis during the Archon War.
Notable Adepti
Within Genshin, the Traveler has metsix Adepti and the last living Yakshathroughout their adventure. Others have only been mentioned in-game, withSkybracer being dead before the events of the gameand others that are absent for an unknown reason.

There are more Adepti we have yet to meet in-game, such asHerblord, Sea Gazer, and Yanfei’s father. There seems to be atie to Herblord through Baizhu and his snake, Changsheng.
After the events of the Archon Quest in Liyue, theonce-isolated Adeptus slowly begin to interact with society again, trying to become part of the society and help the Liyue Qixing to guide the land of Liyue. After the death of his people,Xiao committed himself to defending the land,exploring Liyue and rooting out the demonic forces he finds.
