For the past few years, a great debate has splitThe Simscommunity, and it all centers around the term “Live Mode”. Of course, fans will know that this is the name for the mode in which you watch your Sim go about their daily life, while “Build Mode” lets you erect houses, purchase furniture, and so on. Due to the English language being a funny ol' thing, it’s never been officially explained how Live Mode is meant to be pronounced, as the word ‘Live’ obviously has two different meanings depending on context.
The majority of fans seem to believe that it’s pronounced like “jive” rather than “give”, as switching from Build Mode is like you’ve started the cameras rolling on someone’s life as you watch. It’s not an outlandish assumption to make, but a recent discovery shared by u/lackadaisicaldolphin on The Sims 4 subreddit has turned the entire situation upisde down. It turns out that the correct pronunciation of Live Mode has been shared officially once, as u/lackadaisicaldolphin shares a paragraph found in some old patch notes for The Sims 4 that categorically puts the entire debate to rest.

“Learning time: By the way, in case you were curious on the correct pronunciation of Live, simply say to yourself “I Build in Build Mode, and I Live in Live Mode,” reads the patch notes, sending the entire fanbase into a state of shock and denial. Granted, it’s probably just the one developer who wrote out these patch notes, and they could’ve been poking fun at The Sims community at the time, but it’s the first official confirmation of the correct pronunciation.
“I am going to pretend that I didn’t read this,” says u/TurquoiseNostalgia, echoing a sentiment shared by pretty much everyone else in the Reddit thread. “They can pry ‘Live Mode’ from my cold, dead hands,” says u/littlesquiggle, while u/aidoll refuses to believe what they’ve read until The Sims creator Will Wright confirms it himself. Then you have everyone who only speaks English as a second or third language, who are just perplexed by the entire situation. Really makes you wonder why our language has to be so complictaed for absolutely no reason.
Speaking of developers confirming things, you may recall that The Sim 4 launched its Growing Together expansion last month, which introduced a whole bunch of child-related items and furniture. One of these was a display of children’s drawings, andFinal Fantasy 14 fans immediately spotted what looked like a subtle referenceto the title. A dev later revealed that this child’s drawing actually was a reference, and that several members of The Sims 4 team are huge fans of the MMORPG and sneak in little nods to the series whenever they can.
