The following contains spoilers for The Callisto Protocol. Please do not continue reading unless you have finished the game.

UJC Origins
From the beginning, the main purpose of the United Jupiter Company was toexplore deep space and discover new species. In 2319, before the company’s foundation, a group of scientists pooled enormous amounts of money to perform more biology research. They built a secure lab underneath Chicago and began performing various experiments and research.
The scientists quickly began supplying extensive data on their findings to the United States government. Besides the bio research, they were also working onvast improvements in Artificial Intelligence, which provided massive benefits to the US.

This put the scientists in the good graces of the government and they used this success to facilitate aresearch excursion to the colonies around Jupiter. It was then that the scientists officially formed the UJC.
Researching Callisto
The UJC arrived on Callisto, one of Jupiter’s moons. The company quickly expanded with an array ofcargo shipsstocked with medical supplies to assist the local colonies, like Europa and Arcas. Europa was another one of Jupiter’s moons, while Arcas was theoriginal colony on Callisto.
Arcas was a mining colony at first, but the arrival of the UJC presented many opportunities. The scientists persuaded the people of Arcas to assist them in their research fora brighter future, but they were doomed.

The miners unearthed a massive alien and people beganexperiencing strange mutations. The UJC managed to contain the outbreak and learned people were being affected by the larvae of the alien. Everyone infected transformed into horrifying, mindless monsters but one person managed to retain their intelligence. The UJC labeled himSubject Zeroand concluded that the alien larvae could be thekey to unlocking humanity’s next evolution.
Construction Of Black Iron Prison
Unfortunately, the UJC lost control, and the infected broke containment. The company was forced tocompletely sterilize the colony, killing every person infected including Subject Zero. They extracted more larvae samples from the alien for further research and thenbuilt Black Iron Prison over Arcas.
Although there was only one person who retained their intelligence after being infected, the UJC still wanted topush forward with their experiments. Black Iron Prison served two purposes: solving the risingcrime throughout spaceand using thoseconvicts as test subjectsfor experimentation.

A Brighter Future
When Jacob awakens in his cell, the outbreak has already begun in Black Iron Prison. As he tries to escape, he discovers the alien hidden underneath the prison and the truth behind the UJC. It’s revealedWarden Duncan Coleis a prominent member of the UJC and it’s been his unwavering resolve to continue the experiments.
He believes humans aretoo fragile to survive in spaceand that we must become stronger to survive. Despite the UJC failing to achieve its goal on Callisto, it’s clear they’ll seek other planets and colonies to continue their research toward, what they believe, is a brighter future.
