If you’re anything like me, you may be one of those people who can’t help but laugh during certain sections of horror games. There is a fine line that horror games have to walk a balance between, and some do have a habit of dipping into the ridiculous.

It’s entirely possible that something meant to be horrifying to some is found to be hilarious to others for tons of different reasons. That’s just what makes us all different. Sometimes even the spookiest games around have moments of sheer hilarity if you’re able to disconnect yourself from the eerie atmosphere.
10Resident Evil 5
There might not be a lot to laugh about in the early hours ofResident Evil 5, but I will never not laugh when I am prompted to punch and stomp Plaga-ridden fools left and right. It’s such a ridiculous addition to a zombie game that it’s hard to believe someone greenlit it, but there is another thing.
I mean, we all know where this is really going, don’t we? Chris and Wesker. Chris Redfield, in all his manly glory, punches a boulder out of his way in one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever witnessed. Then there’s Wesker, absolutelystealing every scene with his meme-worthy dialogue.

9Alan Wake
People who missed out on the gem that isAlan Wakeshould go give it a try, even if it does make me laugh. It’s nothing about the atmosphere of the game or the performances of the characters. The issue is simply how you deal with enemies.
Having to use a flashlight as a weapon (at least in part) is hilarious for some reason. Spooky creatures that are totally ready to end your existence are scary, but they become a lot funnier when they have a weakness to household objects.

There are just so many aspects ofLeft 4 Dead 2that make me laugh. First of all, if you play this game with a group of friends, it’s almost impossible to not have an amazing time filled with laughter due to all the potential unfortunate things that can go down.

It’s all thanks to that director working in the background. I will always let out a loud chuckle each time a Witch or Tank spawned directly in the way of me and my friends, especially if it’s close to another Witch or Tank. If you’ve played the game, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
7Man Of Medan
Few games try as hard to be scary asMan Of Medan, but instead, end up being a hilarious experience (outside of those pesky jump scares). A majority of the failed prompt options end up being hilarious if they don’t immediately result in a gory end.
Then there’s the fact that the entire time I played the game I genuinely had no clue what to think about what was occurring. Was it just some kind of old gas causing hallucinations? Was there actually some kind of spirit on board the ship? I’ll never know because I was too busy laughing.

Considering theDead Risingseries is basically all about letting players loose into a world to slay hordes of zombies, this game was bound to be funny. Bashing zombies with everything in sight, including some incredible action-hero moves is a hilarious blast.
Then there’s the fact that you may be an absolutely irresponsible father and waste precious time pounding back gallons of orange juice instead of hunting down Zombrex in time. The situation and characters add to the whole absurdity and the fact that there’s a reality challenge series involving chainsaw-motorcycles and zombies is a hilarious way to start.

5Five Nights At Freddy’s
I might be alone on this, but I really do think that the idea behindFive Nights At Freddy’sis absolutely hilarious. A group of angry animatronics trying to kill you might be scary to some, but to me, I just picture a furious Chuck E Cheese.
An animatronic like that could be coming to get me, but the second it emoted in any kind of way I’d be bursting into laughter. Add in the fact that you can slam doors in their faces, and it just gets so much funnier in my eyes.

4Until Dawn
While some ofUntil Dawn’sjump scares are effective, some of them are undeniably hilarious. The entire section between Jessica and Michael in the cabin is absolute cringy gold in the best way possible, jump scare and all.
There’s also no doubt that this group of sassy people loves their one-liners. Emily can deliver a fantastic line right before slapping Ashley depending on how events play out, and as we all know, anyone who loves a good one-liner is equally ready to laugh at how cheesy they are.

3Eternal Darkness
There is something hilarious about a video game having the gall to try and screw with its players, and that’s exactly what Eternal Darkness sets out to do. The sanity effects of the game have creeped me out once, but now, I can’t help but laugh each time they occur.

Seeing the old-school volume interface pop-up now makes me chuckle every single time, and who could forget about the infamous save-deleting thing? It’s just funny that someone came up with the idea and unleashed it on unsuspecting players, solidifying the game as one you’ll never forget.
2Silent Hill 2
Hear me out here, I promise I’m not taking any joy from the darkestparts of this depressing game. The thing that makes me laugh is similar to the next game in this list, the different performances of the characters.
While it’s possible that the clunky nature of all the dialogue and performances was intentionally to make everything all the more off-putting, hearing James deliver his line about the town being full of monsters and all Eddie can do is eat pizza is iconic and hilarious at the same time.

1Resident Evil 1
Outside of the stellar gameplay, the original Resident Evil 1 might just be one of the funniest horror games of all time. If you don’t believe me, go find a way to watch all the cutscenes and do your best to take them as seriously as possible.
At one point, the game was horrifying, but now, every cheesy line of dialogue will have you in stitches the same way it has me cracking up. I can hear Barrymake his Jill sandwich jokea million times, and I will absolutely never stop laughing at it, thanks to the perfectly awful delivery.
