If you haven’t yet experienced it,Doom Eternalhas a lot going for it. Great gameplay, a pulse-pounding Mick Gordon soundtrack, satisfying to fire guns, and a roster of demons that keep adding something new to the chaotic stew of First person shooter anarchy.

There is an overarching story that’s been going on since way back in the early DOOM games and involves dimension-crossing pseudo-deities, the manipulation of souls on a galactic scale, and bloody demonic war. It all culminates in the Ancient Gods DLC rather satisfyingly, especially if you’ve been following it since the beginning.

The Ending Explained

Despite all the extra moving parts, the winding down of the Slayer’s tale in this particular timeline is relatively simple. It boils down to abig showdown after a spearhead assaultinto Hell. This is an act that would normally be a suicide mission, butthe Slayer comes with an Army, and the other threat of theMaykrswas thankfully subdued.

At the time, the home of thishyper-advanced inter-dimensional racewas swamped and struggling under a massive demon incursion after the barrier between realms was worn thin after theconflict on earth with the Icon Of Sinin the main game. Sothey were a little distracted.

Doom Eternal: The Dark Lords Appearing In The Ancient Gods Part Two

When the events of the first part of the DLC pick up, theKhan Maykr has been destroyed, and hell has thoroughly run a train on Urdak and its inter-dimensional angelic populace. The Doom Slayer and Dr. Samuel Hayden hunt for and then free the Seraphim, which thenbonds with Hayden, becomes corrupted with demonic energy, and isdefeated and teleported awayby the Maykrs ‘deity’The Father.

Doom Slayer then summons the species’ equivalent of Satan, known as The Dark Lord, whichtakes the form of the Slayer. This is where Part Two of the Ancient Gods DLC kicks off.

The Build-Up

The fight between the Doom Slayer and Dark Lord gets postponed, asno blood can be spilt in the Luminariumwhere he was summoned. They both agree to a showdown in theancient demonic city of Immora, the place where the Dark Lord first appeared.

The Slayer is thentransported to the home planet of the Sentinels, Argent D’Nur. TheSentinel Hammer is retrieved from Valen, the man who betrayed the Doom Slayer millennia ago and helped the Demons seal away the Slayer.

Doom Eternal: The Doom Slayer Facing Off Against The Dark Lord

Before our power suit-clad protagonist returns to Earth to find it once again infested with Hell’s Legions. Fighting his way through these monsters, the Slayer eventually finds a way toactivatethe Gate of Divum and travel to Immorafor his showdown with the Dark Lord. The Sentinels alsoarrive with a massive armyat the same time to aid the Slayer, specifically by dealing with Hell’s Minions.

The Showdown

During the apocalyptic showdown with the Dark Lord,a great secret is revealed. As it turns out, theDark Lord is the real ‘Father of The Maykrs’. The deity they all worship, who is also trapped in a special storage sphere, is a false one - a fact unsettlinglyconfirmed by VEGA.

The battle progresses violently, with the two titans knocking each other around like ragdolls. Eventually, theSlayer defeats the Dark Lord. As he dies, all the demons that remained outside the confines of Helldissipate and disappear into the ether.

The Slayer weakens suddenly and substantially because of his connection to the Dark Lord. He is quicklysubdued by Maykr High Priestsas he’s placed in a sarcophagus and stored away once more.

What Just Happened?

So it’s worth slowing things down for a second because a lot happens in those final moments. For a finale, it’s pretty satisfying. The Maykr city is ruinedand they’re functionally set back for a long while - this is good, as Earth is in no state to fight back, but at least they’re united inno longer using demon energyto keep the lights on.

Speaking of, Hell’s minions arelocked in their burning playgroundagain (for now), and everything seems to have reset back to an uneasy status quo.

Doom Eternal: The Maykrs Sealing Away The Doom Slayer In A Sarcophagus

TheSlayer is also removed from the picture, allowing everyone to pick up the pieces before he rumbles through realms like the proverbial bull in a china shop. It’s also a nice mirror of the original sealing, as it wasthree Hell Priests that put Doom Slayer in his first box, andthree Maykr Cultists in the endingof the Ancient Gods Part Two.

There’s also the sudden reveal thatthe Dark Lord created the Father, The Maykr, and everything in existence

Doom Eternal: The Maykrs Storing The Doom Slayer Away

It’s revealed that The Dark Lord was oncea being known as Davoth, who, in his quest for immortality millennia ago, created the Maykrsto help him. They would eventually discover how to live forever usingdemonic energy and souls, but fearing what Davoth could do if he knew the secrets of immortality, they betrayed him.

Davoth was sealed away by his creations, who feared his return and over time turned him into aDevil figurein their belief system.

TheFather was just a Maykr that was imbued with Davoths energyand powers to create - one of the ones who helped seal him away - and they altered a few historical texts tocover it all up.

The Slayer was manipulated by the Dark Lord to destroy the Maykrs asrevenge for the betrayal of his creations. This is deeply interesting as it adds an almost sympathetic tone to Davoth, as although he may have gone down a dark path, originally there were some good intentionsto create a perfect society that would last forever, and he wanted to live long enough to see that.

The Father is left alive at the end of the story, with the two creatures in existence that could possibly have posed a threattaken out of the picture by each other. This opens up the potential for a future showdown when theSlayer comes out of storage. Plus, Hell being leaderless and rudderless will undoubtedly cause some chaos. We can only wait and see.
