Just like othertower defense games, Kingdom Rush has you repurchase and replace your towers with every level and every attempt. But thankfully, you may also buy upgrades that carry across levels. Many of these upgrades simply increase the damage of a specific tower or special attack, but some add new abilities and strategies.

Kingdom Rush Archers and Orc-1

With greater range an archer tower could target two parallel roads, the only downside is these upgrades are costly. The currency used for buying upgrades is the stars you earn for the skillful completion of a level, so the further you progress, the fewer you obtain.

8Eagle Eye & Far Shots

After buying the mostly useless Salvage skill, you’ll be able to buy the first permanent range upgrade for your Archer Towers. Buying both is a small ask and a big gain, with the archer skills being the cheapest in the game. Since the big draw of Marksmen Towers is their range, being able to immediately target further enemies sooner allows for archers to better support nearby barracks towers and catch stragglers.

With both ranged upgrades, a fully upgraded Archer Tower can target as much as half the map, allowing a constant stream of arrows or bullets.

7Arcane Shatter

Being so expensive, slow-firing, and short-range, Magic Towers are often only useful in special situations. That is, until you buy the Arcane Shatter upgrade, which permanently lowers the defense of hit enemies.

With this, your mage towers can stand guard and meet the enemies head on, while your other towers can follow behind and eliminate the weakened attackers. So with this new armour-cracking upgrade, a well-placed mage tower can be used to simply boost the damage of all your other towers.

Kingdom Rush Rain of Fire and Dark Knights

6Scorched Earth

Sometimes your Rain of Fire hits too late or too soon, but with the second upgrade in its skill tree, you can afford to do that. Scorched Earth fireballs leave behind a burning crater that damages passing enemies for five seconds.

Further upgrades improve this, but either way, it adds a new strategic element to how you deploy your Rain of Fire. you’re able to use it to hit the front-runners hard and soften up the followers. It’s especially useful for thinning out great herds of enemies and killing off smaller creatures like Spider Hatchlings.

5Spiked Armour

This top-tier upgrade for the Barracks Towers is doubly useful because it also affects your reinforcements and your heroes. What it does is reflect one-tenth of the damage dealt to them back at their attackers. This effectively boosts the firepower of your footmen, knights and all melee units.

When you’re fighting low-level goblins and spiders this might not be much damage, but when your militia men are fighting bosses like The Juggernaut, just a fraction of their destruction turned back on them is a heavy hit to their health.

Kingdom Rush Axe Throwers and Imps

4Precision

Since archers fire fast and loose, giving them a critical hit chance guarantees a nice boost to their damage. The Precision skill does this, with a one-in-ten chance for an arrow or a bullet to do double damage.

This turns out to be pretty common when your archers are firing arrows like machine guns, so you’ll surely enjoy seeing these big numbers. Even your Musketeer Garrisons will often score critical hits, making their blasts powerful enough to fell even strong monsters like those pesky Trolls and Rocket Riders with a single shot between the eyes.

3Well Fed, Conscripts, Warriors & Legionnaires

The first four upgrades for your reinforcements simply boost their stats. They increase the health, armor, and damage of your backup buddies. Since you’re probably relying on these chums to clean up and hold back the hordes, you’ll want them to be well-equipped, otherwise they’ll fall from a single slash.

Keeping up with their upgrades keeps them useful, and you’ll be wanting their final upgrade, Spear Throw anyway. As a bonus, if you’ve bought these upgrades early, you’ll find they can practically hold off wholehordes of enemieson their own.

2Smart Targeting

The Kingdom Rush series has someridiculous explosive weapons, but the one thing that never changes is that Artillery towers are best used on groups. That said, their bombardments only deal full damage near their epicenter. With the magic of Smart Targeting, enemies will now feel the full blast of your explosives even at the edge of the detonation.

If you’ve come up against a level with heavy swarms of enemies or just love the demolition towers then Smart Targeting is a must-have. As a bonus, this also affects the Tesla’s chain lightning and the Musketeer’s Shrapnel Shot, meaning both these towers also enjoy a major damage boost.

1Spear Throw

The fatal flaw of reinforcements is that they cannot touch flying enemies, instead, your men just sit and stare as they fly by and destroy your castle. The last upgrade in their skill tree fixes this by giving your legionnaires a spear attack that can target both ground and flying enemies.

With this, they have increased range and can be used to fend off any flyers that have managed to surpass your towers. In fact, it also works as just a powerful damage buff, with their spears capable of doing four times more damage than their sword attacks.
