Some of these characters will take the edge off of combat and, if nothing else, provide sanctionative comfort in what can feel like a dangerous, lonely world. But these summoned war heroes are not the only characters worth shining a light on. You’ll also come across a variety of non-combatant inhabitants whose personalities offer richness to the world-building.
8Zhang Fei
Wo Long’s stakes and story are covered in extensive horror. Massacred villages, corpses brunt into statues, and demons lurking around every corner are the norm while trying to save an increasingly ravaged landscape. The dread can feel insurmountable, so thank goodness Zhang Fei exists to provide some well-needed comic relief.
Zhang Fei is the jokester of the pack. He behaves like an over-excited kid in a candy shop; except that kid wields a giant spear and isn’t afraid to flail it about. Having him as a Reinforcement provides natural comfort and you’ll relish in his battle laughter enough to make the journey a bit more bearable.

7Hong Jing
This is the only female warrior you can summon as a reinforcement. But the moment she swears an oath to you and becomes an ally, you’ll want her fighting at your side immediately. Her honor and duty to protect know no bounds, and she will always even the odds no matter the occasion.
Hong Jing is fairly skilled with her jade-green staff, but her projectile attack is where she really shines. She is aligned with the Earth element and uses lightning wizardry to attack from a distance. She uses it very regularly, making her a reliable damage dealer outside of harm’s reach. Always a pleasure starting a stage with her, and always a go-to for a tiger seal summon.

6Zuo Ci
Chinese history and mythologyare ripe with mystical, wise old men. Not only does Zuo Ci fit that description, but his upbeat whimsical traits are admirable. He comes across as a walking being of knowledge and uses his wizardry to turn into a crane — swooping in to save people or offer valuable lore insight to the protagonist.

He also acts as a merchant located in the Hidden Village. Interacting with him will give you the option to reset your build if you fancy changing things up. You can also spend accolade points to learn new gestures and acquire weapons and armor.
5Zhu Xia
The other merchant character in Wo Long is even more useful. Zhu Xia is a blacksmith who sets up a shop in the Hidden Village. She’s peppy, happy to help, and stands proud next to a hammer that’s almost taller than her. And she’s the one you go to for all your upgrading needs.
You can upgrade your weapons and armor, buy and sell gear, and also decorate your character’s armor to a set you like the most. While not a lot is known about Zhu Xia’s backstory, she more than makes up for this in her usefulness.

4Cao Cao
Cao Cao effuses honor and determination from every detail of his being. A valiant leader and headstrong in his decision-making, he’s one of a handful of characters whose personality is given room to breathe. You get him pretty early on as a reinforcement, and he’s one of the most useful fighters.

His relentless attacks delivered from his sword, Heaven’s Reliance, sways a lot of enemy’s attention away from you. Cao Cao can melt health on any demon and can be reliably dependable if you need to get out of the action for a quick heal.
3Golden Cicada Shell Hermit
A Soulslike is not complete without its fair share of bizarre, inexplicable characters. While Wo Long is quite light on enigmatic individuals, there is one character who winsthe strangest NPC award. Atop the tallest tower in the Hidden Village homes a man staring into the sky, rattling on about immortality — begging to eat Golden Cicada Shells.
These shells are collectible items that are waiting to be found if you explore missions thoroughly. Returning them to this NPC is all it takes to begin and end this side quest. The more you bring him, the more obsessive and hungrier he becomes for them. Bring him enough and his dialogue will be replaced with maniacal laughter, as well as give you some useful equipment. His progressive mania is oddly curious and entices you to learn more about him.

2Zhao Yun
One of the earliest members you’ll recruit, Zhao Yun is a recurring warrior with devastating battle capabilities. You’ll first meet him as he fends off a sizable attack from a group of yellow turbans. He uses an Unparalleled Spear, which gives him a proximity advantage toward enemies.
Since he’s one of the first reinforcements you’ll gain, chances are he’ll be accompanying you on a lot of missions. He can be one of the first to achieve a maximum bond, which makes it heart racing when a sub-mission appears that pits you against him in battle. Fighting Zhao is a challenging opponent made harder by the journey you’ve shared with him.

1Shitieshou Demons
Even though these are technically small demons rather than characters, they just could not be omitted on the grounds of adorableness. Shitieshou demons are the only friendly demons in the game and resemblelovable little panda bears. They also have a unique function.
They act as the collectibles of the game, and if you come across one of these fellas, you should drop a piece of loot near it. They will then proceed to eat that loot and barf back an accessory. To end the cute sequence, they fall onto their backs and sleep. you’re able to visit the ones you feed in the Hidden Village — some of which will be performing unique animations.
