This adventure puts you face to face with horrible draconic powers and dark deities, and asks your characters what they’ll put on the line when war knocks on their doorsteps. No matter how you want to approach this adventure, there is the question of what kind of character to make. Class and race are important, but let’s not forget your character’s background as well. Here are the best backgrounds for characters in Dragonlance: Shadow Of The Dragon Queen.
10Gladiator
A good choice for any martial class, Gladiators are used to the stress and glory of battle. This is something you will surely see a lot of on your journey here.
Whether you’re looking to further your name orjust want a fighton a bigger scale, entering into the journey that this adventure sets you on will test your might and martial prowess to the extreme. The extra fighting equipment and a feature that allows you to find a home anywhere that has heard of your skill is a great boon for traveling.

9Acolyte
If you want to play a Paladin or Cleric, then Acolyte is probably more up your alley. It gives extra proficiencies to Insight and Religion, but there’s more to it than just that.
It doesn’t do a lot in the way of equipment, but you probably didn’t enter into the faith for money’s sake. It does net you two more languages and gives you shelter at whatever temple or church you have aligned yourself with. It’s not a hard task to figure out why any sort of religious figure would take up arms with Takhisis wanting to dominate Krynn with a scaly grip.

8Knight Of The Order
Knights are always seeking glory in battle. Whether you want to run a Paladin or just a Fighter with a little extra pizzazz, this one is for you.
There’s a surprising amount of open-endedness to the Knight background. You may have joined forces with other Knights and made oaths just for this war, or it may be a side-quest in another loftier goal. Either way, there’s a good selection of proficiencies, languages, and equipment to boost your character creation. Not to mention a feature that can pull a few strings here and there.

7Hermit
Good for many different types of characters, the Hermit background is sort of what you make of it. As long as you don’t mind travelling anyway.

The life of a Hermit doesn’t come with much but the bare necessities, unless where knowledge is concerned. Herbalism, Medicine, and Religion are all good benefits to help after a scrap. You can also have some fun deciding what grand knowledge your character has learned while away from the civilized world.
6Urchin
Urchin is a classic choice forRogues, but with some open options for other classes too. In times of war, everyone rises up to fight back, even the downtrodden.
If you yearn for a character with more subtlety in mind, then look to the Urchin background. Sleight of Hand and a Disguise Kit bolster your skills of trickery and the City Secrets feature allows you to know the narrows and back alleys of the city you reside in like the back of your hand. It may not be as combat focused as other choices, but this is a good option for more stealthy approaches to problems.

5Soldier
The backbone of any army. The common Soldier is tasked with keeping Kalaman safe. No matter what you decide leads your Soldier away from the front lines and into an adventuring party, there’s still plenty of room to save your city.
This background includes some varied equipment, but where it shines is its ability to allow you to pick a rank. Pulling rank in certain instances could do a lot of good, allowing you to gather info or maybe even trade with the regular army.

4Mage Of High Sorcery
One of the backgrounds found in Shadow Of The Dragon Queen, the Mage Of High Sorcery is a great pick for any spellcaster you want to play.
Arcana and History buffs are great choices for learning more about the world of Krynn. No matter what color of robe you choose for your Mage, you get the extra benefit of connections with other members. Not to mention the extra languages could come in handy too.

3Outlander
An easy pick for Druids and Rangers alike. Outlanders don’t stick to one place for very long, so no matter what brings them to Kalaman, you know it’s important.

Whether you’ve been rehomed from the Dragon Army’s spread or just want to come to Kalaman to help with the fight, your penchant for geography and your Survival skills will help tremendously. The option to go full wildman or just stay a stoic wanderer makes this a fun choice to play around with.
2Noble
What’s a more impressive story than a Noble who chose (or was forced) to go off and fight when their town was threatened?
If that sounds like a good character to you, then check out the Noble background. As a higher-up in the social order, you may use your name to leverage people you run across. In addition, you have a bit of extra money and some nice equipment. The extra proficiencies in History and Persuasion aren’t a bad idea either.

1Knight Of Solomnia
Martial look no further than the Knight Of Solomnia for a background. It’s similar to the Knight Of The Order background, but with a little bit of extra connection to the plot and setting of Shadow Of The Dragon Queen.
Nothing beats a Knight directly tied to the sanctity of Kalaman than to be a powerful member of your adventuring party. The extra knowledge of the people and area is also helpful, and of course, there are the extra points to Athletics and Survival that should help keep you alive.
