Spell Ruler, even by modern standards, remains one of the strongest sets ever printed inYu-Gi-Oh!It was the third set ever released (originally under the name Magic Ruler before being changed to avoid potential association with Magic: The Gathering) back in 2002.

As the name implies, the set was heavily built around powerful spell cards. These are among some of the best ones in the game’s history. Spell Ruler introduced ritual monsters, quick-play spell cards, and was the first appearance of the fan-favorite toon monsters. Thanks to how many powerful cards the set introduced, Spell Ruler remains one of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s most iconic sets.

10Cyber Jar

One of the best flip monsters of all time, Cyber Jar was a staple of the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh! Since the cards you revealed would go to your hand if you couldn’t special summon them. It essentially was a card thatlets you draw five cardsand get free bodies on the battlefield. It even lets you put them in face-down Defense Position to allow you to still get your flip effects.

The card was banned in 2006 and remained so for over a decade until late 2022, when it was limited to one copy per deck.

9Sonic Bird

Sonic Bird is amainstay of Ritual decksand still sees play in the modern game. Often, Ritual spells are what Ritual decks need to function, so having a card like Sonic Bird that can fetch them out from the deck directly is fantastic.

Although Sonic Bird only gets its effect on Normal summon, most Ritual decks do not use their Normal summon, so not having one is hardly an issue. Ritual decks are generally weaker since they need both a Ritual monster and spell, but Sonic Bird adds some very welcomed consistency to the strategy.

8Mystical Space Typhoon

In the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh! Mystical Space Typhoon was thepremiere spell and trap removal. It is a very simple effect that lets you destroy any spell or trap card unconditionally. It’s on a quick-play spell as well, which allows you to use it during either player’s turn.

While Mystical Space Typhoon has been powercrept by other similar cards, it’s still a staple of older formats such as Goat format (where it’s so strong it’s limited there). In the modern game, Mystical Space Typhoon stayed limited all the way up until 2010, when it was eventually fully unbanned one year later.

7Upstart Goblin

Upstart Goblin is a card with practically no downside to run. It lets you draw a card by giving 1,000 life points to your opponent. Since life points hardly matter, Upstart Goblin may as well just say “draw one card.” Since Upstart Goblin has no specific activation requirement, you may play it as soon as you draw it. It replaces itself when you play it, so you are essentially playing a smaller deck.

Despite its simplicity, this effect is so powerful it has been limited since late 2016 and is unlikely to ever move from that position.

6Giant Trunade

A staple for combo decks, Giant Trunade was one of the main ways to clear out spell and trap cards to ensure your opponent could not interrupt you. In theolder days of the game, spell negateswere not common; often there was little the opponent could do to counter it.

The card has been banned since late 2011 for its power. It makes it so combo decks did not have to worry about interaction, and it completely shuts down control decks that are playing a lot of spell and trap cards.

5Confiscation

One of themain hand destruction cardsfeatured in Spell Ruler, even the weakest of the lot, Confiscation is still fantastic. Its effect simply lets you discard any card from your opponent’s hand. While you have to pay 1,000 life points, this is a small price to get rid of one of your opponent’s key cards to set them back.

The card has been banned since 2007 and is unlikely to ever return. The only downside is the card is sent to the graveyard, so if your opponent’s hand is full of cards that want to be there, it sets it up for them.

4The Forceful Sentry

The Forceful Sentry is the best hand destruction card where you have full control over the card you’re forcing your opponent to discard. Unlike other similar cards, The Force Sentry shuffles the card into the deck. This shuts down the opponent’s ability to get the card back easily, as getting a card out from the deck is the hardest place to get one from.

There is no cost to pay, which allows it to be used without worry. While it is a one-for-one, it’s worth it to cut your opponent off of their main play enabler. The Forceful Sentry was added to the banlist in 2005 and will likely stay there.

3Delinquent Duo

The best hand destruction card goes to Delinquent Duo. It is one of the only ones that let you take two cards out of their hand as opposed to just one. Even though they can choose the second card, Delinquent Duo is a two-for-one in card advantage. With how important card advantage is in Yu-Gi-Oh! an effect like this that makes the opponent essentially play with two fewer cards is phenomenal.

It was limited to one copy per deck on the second-ever banlist in late 2002 before being banned in 2004 (although, it was briefly limited again before being promptly banned once more, where it remains).

2Snatch Steal

Snatch Steal is the best card that can steal an opponent’s creature and bring it to your side of the battlefield. Since it is an equip spell, it does not target, so it gets around almost every form of protection. Although the opponent gains 1000 life points each of their standby phases, this hardly matters when youcan win the game with their boss monsterbefore the life gain becomes relevant.

The card has been banned since 2007 and was briefly put to one copy per deck in 2015 before immediately going back on the banlist just three months later. Snatch Steal has shown how powerful it is and why it needs to stay banned even in the modern game.

1Painful Choice

Painful Choice was a card that only got progressively stronger as the game evolved. With how many decks rely on the graveyard now, Painful Choice was a way that set up four different cards there, and you still get one of them into your hand.

Painful Choice was still solid early on and got limited to one copy in 2002. The card was banned just two years later and is highly unlikely to ever be unbanned. A card that sends just one card to the graveyard is so strong, it’ll get limited (Foolish Burial). A card that sends four, like Painful Choice, is arguably the best spell card ever printed.
