Super Smash Bros.fans are feeling nostalgic, hoping that the next game brings back elements from Brawl. More specifically, fans want to see aspects of Subspace Emissary make their way into the next Smash game, having been absent from the series since 2008.

This comes as Smash fans look back on Subspace Emissary’s enemy designs, appreciating the wild designs that never got used again. Even thoughNintendohas since ditched them, fans still appreciate them fifteen years later, prompting them to share other aspects of the iconic story mode that they’d love to see make a return.

“These look like they’re fromFinal Fantasyor something,” says Reddit user pewisamood, sharing some screenshots of the classic enemies. “Brawl is super underrated.”

“Favorite Smash mode hands down,” agrees MrSnuffle_. “Nothing can beat the joy of playing the story mode over and over. I hope they do something similar in the next game.”

Dozens of fans are in agreement, feeling that the Super Smash Bros. series hasn’t quite managed to recapture the magic of Brawl’s bizarre campaign mode since 2008. For some, this is all down to these unique enemy designs, as the devs opted to bring in something fresh, rather than use enemies from other Nintendo games as Super Smash Bros. Melee had.

Of course, Subspace Emissary wasn’t all a barrel of laughs. Anyone who tried to 100 percent the mode will remember going up against swarms of these enemies at higher levels, desperately trying to dodge all of their attacks. Worse yet was trying to get all of the trophies, as this involved keeping enemies alive long enough to have a trophy stand lobbed at them. While they keep attacking you, of course.

Despite this, it definitely seems that the playerbase is in favour of bringing something like Subspace Emissary back to the series. Some mentionSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate’sWorld of Lightas an alternative, but it wasn’t quite as extravagant as Brawl’s offerings all of those years earlier.

With that being said, there are other aspects of Brawl that fans would happily see left behind. Tripping was an irritating mechanic that only appeared in this 2008Wiigame, causing characters to fall over from time to time, leaving them open to attacks. There was a one percent chance of this happening whenever a player dashed, and while this might not sound like a lot, it quickly adds up when you’re running around the stage, trying to deal some damage and avoid attacks. Even tripping once could cost you a life, since you’d have to wait to be able to get up again.

In any case, it remains to be seen when another Smash game is ready to be revealed. Who knows? After years of fan requests, maybe Nintendo will realise that players want a proper story mode again.
