The Super Mario Bros. Moviehas finally hit cinemas and, while there arearguments to be had regarding its overall quality, the general consensus is that Jack Black’s portrayal of Bowser is pretty spot on and one of the movie’s biggest highlights. Not only does he nail the character of Bowser, but he also stars in an epic power ballad called ‘Peaches’ in which he passionately sings about the love of his life whilst playing the piano.
It’s a fun little song that’s increasing in popularity as the days go by and more people see it, and it’s official music video has already managed to rack up 5 million views on YouTube. It’s popularity is going from strength to strength, and if it continues to grow, there’s a real possibility that it could be nominated for an Oscar.

First noted byVariety, there is a category at the Oscars for Best Original Song in which music specifically written for movies can win an award. It’s been a staple of the Oscars since 1934 when it was first introduced, and recent winners include the likes of ‘No Time To Die’ by Billie Eilish and ‘Naatu Naatu’ by M. M. Keeravani for RRR. Animated movies are also thrown into the mix, though the majority of recent winners have been songs from Disney/Pixar productions, the last one being ‘Remember Me’ from Coco.
Obviously, ‘Peaches’ is a little more tongue in cheek than your average Best Original Song nominee, but that hasn’t stopped the sillier songs from being nominated in the past. The Academy Awards states that any song that “consists of words and music” that’s written specifically for a motion picture is eligible for nomination, which means that Bowser’s heartfelt love song is more than eligible for submition. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out if it actually makes the cut though.
In other Mario movie news, it seems like Nintendo and Illumination have a big hit on their hands, as the movie recently smashed box office records for the highest-grossing opening weekend of 2023. It’s even managed toovertake the likes of Frozen 2to become the best performing animated movie in its debut week. We’ll see if Mario has the legs to break more records, but we can definitely assume that these numbers will be big enough for Nintendo to greenlight a sequel. Maybe we will get thatmuch-requested Nintendo Cinematic Universe after all.
