Jedi: Survivorlaunched last week and you’ve been busy finding all sorts ofStar Warseaster eggs, includingthe ability to have Cal Kestis cosplay as Anakin Skywalker. Some of the game’s references aren’t so obvious and aren’t tipping their hat to something else Star Wars-related at all. Including a nod toSuper Metroid, a subtle easter egg some fans immediately picked up on, and despite debate has since been confirmed to be intentional by Survivor’s creators.

The Super Metroid reference in question comes when Cal needs to be shown how he can hop between two walls to climb to an otherwise unreachable spot. Just in case it wasn’t evident what you need to have Cal do at that moment, three little animals do it first, showing him the way. Cal then proceeds to copy what they did, and the nod to Super Metroid at that moment was not lost onJeff Grubb.

Grubb appears to have been the first person to point out the Survivor moment was a clear homage to the iconic Samus game. While many enjoyed the reference along with him after having it pointed out, others disagreed. Perhaps not believing something from a very old Metroid game would be an easter egg in a new Star Wars title. Enter someone who was at the previews for Jedi: Survivor, played through that moment, and asked the devs whether it was a Super Metroid easter egg or not.

Turns out it definitely was an intentional tip of the cap to theSNESgame. “I literally asked the devs about it during the preview event (it was part of the preview content, too) and was told in no uncertain terms ‘Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a metroidvania, after all’,”James Galizioreplied to Grubb. A reply thread that had become an argument over whether the jumping aliens were a Super Metroid reference or a happy accident by that point.

A very cool reference to a game that has inspired countless others over the past 30 years, and a welcome distraction from the discourse that has surrounded Survivor since its launch. ThePCversion of the game, in particular, launched in pretty rough shape.EA rolled out an update for the PC version of the gameon Monday with a long list of improvements being made to the console version today.
