The Starting Spells

Before you unlock other spells, you must start with thebasic spell in each element category. Since the spells follow a skill tree system, you must unlock all six starting spells before you start. However, you may want to know which ones are worth using, so ensure you compare them and see which ones work for your situation.

Fireball

It shoots a fire blast in a line.

It’s a decent starting fire spell, so go with it if you must deal with ice enemies. Remember thatit requires some aiming, so ensure you lock onto an enemy before using it.

Icicle

It shoots an icicle blast in a line.

Just like the previous fire spell. It also only costs one bar of mana, so it won’t take much to prepare it, and itworks as a good option against fire enemies.

Sap Beam

It launches a slow-moving homing nature spell at a foe.

Gust

It has a rotating wind projectile that circles you and hits enemies.

Static Shock

The same as the previous one, except it has a field that deals continuous storm damage to enemies in the area.

Poison Spores

This spell doesn’t home in on enemies like Sap Beam, and costs more mana; however, it shootsfour blasts in an x around youbased on where you point it. For example, if you aim it above you, the attack will simultaneously launch a shot down, left, and right.

Since you can aim it in various directions, you canhit multiple enemies with the blasts. The attack might not be the best option against a single enemy, but it can work great against waves, groups, or boss fights.

Go with this oneif you suspect you’ll be in an arena, but you may want to swap to a different spell if you think you’ll fight a boss soon. You can usually check the map and see if you’ll approach an exclamation point soon to determine if you’ll face a boss.

Even if you lose against a boss or group of enemies, you canrun back to a checkpoint after you get a game over to change your spells.

Thunderstorm

You also have the Thunderstorm spell as a strong option against most bosses and enemies. Instead of having a field on the ground,lightning will strike multiple times around you, prioritizing enemies.

The design gives you a projectile to work with, butyou can’t aim it. On the other hand, this canwork better than the field left on the ground from Static Shock, so it’ll help you with various enemies.

You’ll see a blast of lightning about to strike a location, which will hitafter a delay. This spell worksbest against groups of enemies or bosses who don’t move around much. The spell should prioritize them, though the attack can miss based on the situation.

The design also helps you focus on melee attacks or dodging rather than aiming your spells. Go with this if you want toprioritize other actions and not multitaskwhile dealing damage with your magic.

Ocult Shield

Most of the spells you unlock in this game are offensive, so the occasional defensive abilities can make a difference. If you want one of the best defensive spells you can get early, you shouldunlock the Ocult Shield.

The three mana cost may worry you, but it has a fantastic effect that makes a difference: you get a bonus shield. Theshield goes on top of your health, offering multiple benefits that make a difference while you fight enemies.

The spell also doesn’t run out after a while, so you have theshield to protect you if you don’t take damage.

Youcan’t stack the shields on top of each other, so don’t try to cast it if you have a full shield.

The new shield will eitherrefill it or add a new onedepending on whether you have it activated.

Hijacked Spells Pack

For these two spells, you’ll unlock them by hijacking magic from some bosses. Because of that, you can technically miss the spells if you don’t hijack the corresponding bosses, so ensure you do so to get these powerful spells.

Piercing Ice

You get this one if you hijack the Polar Lizard boss. This spell works like the Icicle spell, except it has a line of ice that travels across the ground that allows it tostrike multiple enemiesrather than one. However, moves slower than the Icicle spell.

The ice left behind can also strike enemies, so it works as an excellent alternative to the Icicle spell.

It even has the exact mana cost of Icicle, so stick with this option if you have the DLC.

Shrieking Souls

You can miss this spell if you don’t go to thesecond Giant’s Helm fight. If you’re worried about missing it, defeat the first Giant’s Helm, and go to thesecondary mission directly after it. Doing so will take you to the second fight, where you’ll unlock this spell.

Shrieking Souls costs three mana andshoots multiple wind projectiles in a direction. You canchange the direction between blasts, aiming them at different enemies and striking multiple foes. This spell works exceptionally well againstenemies that don’t move around much, so you may not want to use it against frog enemies.

It deals more damage than other options since it shoots multiple blasts, though you can’t let walls get in the way while you use it.
