You know when you’re losing onFIFAor getting beaten by the same boss over and over, you lean forward in an attempt to better your video game prowess? Well,PlayStationdoesn’t want you to, and for good reason. A patent filed by the console creator’s parent companySonyhas outlined plans to intervene in your gaming sessions, reminding you to take a break and check your posture.
Discovered byOpAttack(thanks,Push Square), the patent appears to have been filed a few years ago. That may mean it never sees the light of day, or perhaps PlayStation is just waiting for the perfect time to roll it out. Judging by the filing’s abstract, recommendations regarding how players should be sat and even how they should be using their controllers would pop up on the screen.

“A game intervention server may evaluate, based on learning models, posture, and physical motions for players for repetitive, unbalanced, or excessive motions,” the patent reads. “The game intervention server may make recommendations regarding breaks, stretches, warm-up/cool-down, curbing extended periods of play, etc.” So no more all-night gaming marathons if PlayStation thinks you’ve been sat in the same position for too long.
The patent states the reminders to gamers would appear on the screen in the form of notifications, allowing them to pause the game without exiting. If it is an idea that is ever rolled out onPS5andPS4, it will presumably be one that can be toggled on and off. While the premise has been thought up to benefit of those using its consoles, knowing you’ll be told to stop playing every hour or so would be a huge turn-off for a lot of PlayStation’s current and potential player base.
As noted above, an idea being patented doesn’t mean it will become a reality. PlayStation has filed them for various things in recent years, some of which have come to be and others that have not. I’m still waiting forlast-gen peripherals to be compatible with my PS5, and really eager to see ifthat patent to add smells to gamesever becomes a reality.
