The Spin Dash attack has been one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s signature moves for years. It allowsSonicto rev himself up like a car with its parking brake deployed and then unleash a high-speed forward dash, slicing through any unfortunate robots in his way. The move debuted in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and has been a staple of most Sonic games since then.Except forSonic Frontiers. For whatever reason, the Sonic Team decided that Sonic didn’t need his Spin Dash when Frontiers launched back in November. Probably because Sonichas a bunch of other moves, like the Cyclone Kick, Sonic Boom, and my personal favorite, Phantom Rush. But die-hard Sonic fans were left wondering what happened to the time-honored Spin Dash.Related:The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog Is Everything The Series Should BeWell, wonder no longer. A dataminer by the name of Kirol Seych found references to the Spin Dash in the files from theSights, Sounds, and Speed update. This suggested that the Spin Dash is at least in development if not outright planned for a future update.

Seych reached out to Sonic Frontiers director Morio Kishimoto to ask what’s up, and Kishimoto confirmed that the Spin Dash will return in the game’s second free update.

“Oh my God, you found out!“Kishimoto wrote(with help from Google Translate). “Actually, we tried to include it in the first update, but we decided that it didn’t meet everyone’s expectations, so we’re perfecting it for the second update.”

In a follow-up tweet,Kishimoto explainedthat the Spin Dash was originally omitted from the first update but he “decided to take on the challenge after listening to everyone’s opinions here.” Thus proving that Sega does listen to the Sonic community from time to time. Those same Sonic fans are hoping that the new Spin Dashwill feel more like Sonic Adventure’sand not like Sonic Adventure 2’s.

We know thatSonic Frontiers has two more free updatesafter Sights, Sounds, and Speed. Likely scheduled for Sonic’s birthday (June 23, mark your calendars), the update will bring new Open Zone challenges, new Koco, and a surprise party for Sonic. Kishimoto has spoiled at least one of those surprises, but there are surely more in store for Sonic’s birthday.

The third and final update (at least, that we know of) will add to Frontiers' story and also add new playable characters, including Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. Sage is also likely to be involved somehow, based on the teaser provided in Sega’s roadmap, but that’s all we know.
