The recently released mod forSkyrimcalledThere is No Umbrajust added a rideable talking sword to the game. While this may be the most eyebrow raising feature, There is No Umbra is in fact a massive mod, promising to give players the same immersive experience as the base game, adding almost a dozen quests, several thousand lines of spoken dialogue, brand new locations, mechanics, animations, and more.

Featuring well over 5,000 professionally voiced lines of dialogue, the mod offers a “DLC-sized questline” with “many possible endings” in which “your choices really do matter.” The standout feature of the mod is, of course, the eponymous sword, Daumbra, which is the “newest incarnation of the cursed sword Umbra.” This naturally isn’t just any old sword, being fully summonable, throwable, and even rideable. Players are able to ride the sword at “high speed like a hoverboard.”

According to the modder behind There is No Umbra, FableForge, the sword “can be your follower, but she can also be your weapon, and comes with several mechanics which I think are somewhat novel such as riding on her like a hoverboard, or throwing her like a javelin (and then she fights the baddies at the spot where she lands), mind control, teleportation, telekinetically using the enemies' own weapons against them, and so on.”

There is No Umbra is not, on the other hand, all about a rideable sword. The mod offers a variety of different quests, locations, and mechanics which are sure to keep even long time players engaged. The best part is that everything in the mod is “lore friendly.”

“The focus, at least for me, is the story,” FableForge explains. “I believe the more real choices we get to make in a story, the more we care for it, and by that standard, yeah, you’re probably going to care a lot. There are many big choices in this mod and many endings to make them matter. No two people will experience this story in the exact same way.”

The modding community has been a real boon for Skyrim fans, allowing them to experience new adventures and gameplay mechanics, both of which have greatly extended the lifespan of this already 12-year-old game. There is No Umbra falls right into this category of mods, being a must play for any Skyrim fan looking for something new. With its lengthy questline, exciting locations, and of course the floating sword Daumbra, pretty much every player is sure to find something interesting and exciting.
