It is a unique game for sure, balancing FPS characteristics with survival and crafting. There are thankfully, some other games in the same vein if you need more to scratch that itch.

10The Forest

If you haven’t played the first in the series, now is your time to go back and visitThe Forest. It isn’t as clean cut as the sequel and all of its improvements, but it is still worth your time.

The titular forest and all of its creepy mutants are here for you again, but without the missing billionaire plot. You’ll definitely get a better sense of the hype people had for Sons of the Forest after checking out the predecessor.

9Choo Choo Charles

Replace the flesh-hungry mutants of Sons of the Forest with a demonic train with spider legs, and you haveChoo Choo Charles.

Your base is your own train in this game, of which you can outfit with tools and weapons to help you explore your surroundings and avoid the demonic train entity that stalks you. It’s definitely an odd game, but one that matches the tension, survival gameplay and crafting elements of Sons of the Forest almost to a T.

8Rust

Another island-based survival game, but this time with a push towards PVP.Rustsees you building bases and weapons from scraps found around your island in the hopes of surviving and defeating other players with the same goal in mind.

It may not have the graphics of Sons of the Forest, but that shouldn’t keep you from the cult classic that is this game. If you want a similar game but with a little more of a human element, then look no further than Rust.

7Ark: Survival Evolved

The enemies in this game take theform of dinosaurs. Which, are still quite deadly, but are less likely to give you nightmares. Unless you watched Jurassic Park at too young an age.

6Grounded

This is another game that takes the survival genre of game and reduces the horror element a little bit. If you are an arachnophobe though, then you may disregard that information. Or at least turn on the arachnophobia options before you dive intoGrounded.

Yes, there are creepy spiders aplenty in this game, where you find yourself as a kid shrunk in your own backyard. Fight creepy crawlies, craft bases out of twigs, and try to find your way back to normal size.

5The Long Dark

If you wanted a bit more walking and tense story in addition to your survival game, then look no further thanThe Long Dark.

An EMP-like event has crashed your plane somewhere in thefrozen Canadian tundra. You must survive, find your friend, and learn about the world that surrounds you in this somewhat post-apocalyptic survival game. It isn’t as combat heavy or as scary as Sons of the Forest, but the setting and sound design combined with the story make for a compelling time.

4Far Cry 3

Unfortunately, the odd occurrences you’ve caught wind of aren’t even the half of it. Monsters stalk you as you try to find your way out of the facility, with only your camera there to help you through the maze of hallways.

2Minecraft

No horrible mutants here, but the creepers and zombies ofMinecraftare still good for a jump-scare now and then.

This is the end-all be-all of crafting games, and is perfect if Sons of the Forest got your heart racing a little too much. There’s even a creative mode if you want to spend your time building the tree house of your dreams, and this time Kelvin isn’t here to mess it all up.

1No Man’s Sky

A galaxy of planets to explore, creatures to meet, and plenty of crafting all wait for you inNo Man’s Sky. It had a rocky launch for sure, but has grown incredibly since then.

It is far from as scary as Sons of the Forest — sure there are alien creatures that could do you harm — but your biggest enemy is the void of space, which is scary in its own way. There is however, plenty of crafting and exploration if you need a bit more sci-fi to your survival game.
