The Witcher 3quest, The Final Trial, is something of a return to school for Geralt and Lambert. Yennefer asked the latter to help her charge a phylactery with elemental energy for reasons unknown. He responds to the lack of information by brewing hooch instead of working, making Geralt join him to get the job done.

This quest lets you have a first-hand experience of a witcher’s exam. All the witchers allude to their training’s difficulty, though nothing quite matches the reality of the assessment. There isn’t an answer key, but this guide will guide you through the quest and its choices.
Heading Down To The Lake
After returning to Kaer Morhen in the questUgly Baby,Geralt will need to help the witchers with the tasks that Yennefer had assigned. This quest starts with Geraltfinding Lambert in Kaer Morhen’s main hall, making alcohol instead ofbringing the phylactery fromGet Juniorto the Circle of Elements.
Lambert will get started after Geralt talks to him. A rock slide has blocked the easy way to the Circle, with the only remaining route being a reenactment of the Trial of the Medallion done by the School of the Wolf’s trainees.

Lambert will lead Geralt through a hole in Kaer Morhen’s wall, setting off for the lake. You willencounter a flock of harpieshalfway through the journey. Defeat them and continue to theLakeside HutFast Travel point by the lake.
Lambert willcomment on Geralt’s skills, depending on how you fight. It’s a rare opportunity to hear positive words slip from his lips.

The pair find an empty dock, with Lambert’s boat conspicuous in its absence. Geralt makes an educated guess as to its location, giving you a quest marker for a nearby location.
Geralt guesses correctly, finding it stuck in some plants andprotected by Drowned Dead and a Bilge Hag.Defeat all the monsters, starting a cutscene that has the witchers sailing out across the lake.

Investigating The Kid
Lambert takes the tiller as they sail to a cave, talking to Geralt as they sail across the lake. After a lengthy conversation, they reach the other shore. Before theyenter the cave, they hear a child scream. You will have to chooseif Geralt will investigate.
Investigating the sound willlead Geralt into a foglet ambush, with three of the necrophages trying to kill the witchers. Lambert will mock Geralt for the choice before heading to the cave.

The fogletscan be forced out of the mistby usingYrden or Aard. Alternatively, a well-placedMoon Dust bombwill prevent them from transforming entirely.
You will not fight the fogletsif you ignore the sound.
Facing Old Speartip (Or Not)
As Lambert has been describing throughout the quest, the cave you enter is wherewitchers-to-be sneak around a monster called Old Speartipduring their trial. It’s dangerous for Geralt and Lambert and deadly for a young boy.
Afterclimbing up a ledgeinside the cave, you will reach a fork in the road that gives you the chance toavoid Old Speartiporfight him.

Go Left
Climb up the pathon the left, letting you navigate a path above the sleeping cyclops that will let youleave without a fight.
Go Right
UseAard to break down the rocks on the right, making plenty of noise. This willbring you next to Old Speartip, making itdifficult to avoid fighting him.
Lambert will ask Geralt tokill Old Speartipseveral times as you navigate the cave, clearly nursing a grudge against the monster. Suffice it to say,Lambert will appreciate the chance to kill Old Speartipthough it is ultimately your choice to do so.

Old Speartip isa deadlier cyclops. He has more health and hits harder than his unnamed kin, but little else.Use Quento protect yourself from his wide-ranging attacks.Ogroid Oilwill improve damage dealt to him.
Be especially wary of hisstomp attack.Old Speartip willjump into the air, landing hard enough to send a witcher flying. This attack hasa deceptively wide rangeand willtake out large chunks of your healthunless you use Quen.

Regardless of your choice, the two witchers will emerge from the other side of the cave and ready for the final part of the trial.
Meeting The Trolls
It’s a quick tripup the mountainto find the first of three trolls. The trio were the final test for aspiring witchers, forcing the young monster-slayers to find some way around them. It willrun from the witchers.Chase it down tostart a conversation.
There isa Place of Powersouth of the cave’s exit. Meditate near it toreceive an Ability Point.

No matter how you try to manage the trolls,Lambert will aggravate them, leading to the trolls attempting to stone the two witchers.Sprint to a nearby cavejust ahead, avoiding a humiliating end.
The trolls will be waiting for you on the other side of the cave. Once again, you will have tonegotiate with the trolls. They will ask for the witchers toleave their swords with the trolls.Refusing willstart a fight, forcing you to kill all three of them.
What Happens When You Leave Your Swords With The Trolls
This decision is how Geralt treats sentient monstersmore than any gameplay considerations. There are no further monsters after the trolls and the monsters will not betray Geralt, meaning thatyou can safely surrender your weapons to them.
On the other hand, the trolls' cave has valuable treasure within. They will not be pleased with Geralt helping himself to their things and willattack if you enter their cave.If you intend on pilfering their belongings later on,you might as well kill them nowto save yourself the trouble.
Attempting toenter the cave without weaponswill have the trolls turning hostile on anunarmed Geralt, which would be an unpleasant experience at the very least.
Fighting three trolls at once ismore an exercise in patiencethan anything else. The monsters can soak up staggering amounts of damage but are limited toslow and easy-to-dodge attacks. If you have finishedFarting Trollsfrom Skellige, this would be a familiar exercise.
Completing The Final Trial
Having finally reached your objective, you will need tocharge the phylactery. To do so,light the four brazierssurrounding the altar beforeplacing the phylactery onto it.This will start a final conversation between Geralt and Lambert.
With the objective complete, you canreturn to Kaer Morhen with Lambertorcontinue exploring the area. The quest will end after making this choice. You will need to finishDisturbanceandTo Bait a Forktail…before you can continue with Ugly Baby.
As you have no doubt experienced, this areais hard to get to.Before heading back to Kaer Morhen, considerstaying until you find the Ruined Watchtower Fast Travel point. It will save you a return trip if you want to explore the area in greater detail.
