Segaappeared to play an early April Fool’s prank onSonicfans last week by revealing the blue blur had been murdered. Turns out it wasn’t a prank and there’s actually a really cool, free-to-play game onSteamthattasks you with finding Sonic’s murderer. What some of you might not know is that 31 years before The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails died in a game under suspicious circumstances too.

“Speaking of a beloved character’s possible demise,Sonic 2(8-bit) is coming to Sonic Origins Plus,” Sega tweeted from Sonic’s official account. Sonic Origins will get an expansion this summer thatadds all 12 of the hedgehog’s Game Gear titles to the collection. That includes the handheld version of Sonic 2 which features an ending that heavily implies Tails has died because you didn’t put in enough legwork.

31-year-old spoilers for those of you who haven’t played the Game Gear version of Sonic 2, but like most Sonic games from that era, it has two endings. One for players who track down all the Choas Emeralds, and a “bad ending” if you don’t. In Sonic 2, the bad ending showed Sonic looking up into the night sky, an image of Tails made up of stars looking down on him.

As if that wasn’t a heavy enough implication that Tails is dead because you were too lazy to get all the emeralds, Sonic 2’s good ending features Sonic and Tails side-by-side looking up at a starry image of the two of them together. Since Tails has returned time and time again, up until and including having a key role inSonic Frontiers, it’s probably safe to assume the good ending is canon.

An amusing tip of the cap to some deep Sonic lore, but the replies to the tweet are inundated with complaints about the games Sega has decided to add to Origins. Better versions of some of the Game Gear games, including Sonic 2, exist as they were also released on Master System. Sonic fans have questioned why Sega wouldn’t add those versions of the game to the collection rather than, or at least as well as, the Game Gear ones.
