InResident Evil 4 Remake, when you return to the village and the tower explodes, several enemy wolves will be waiting to gang up on poor ol' Leon Kennedy. As it turns out, they didn’t just wander in from the outskirts - someone let them out of their cage, and that someone can be killed earlier.
As pointed out by u/klyespelledcaio on theResident Evilsubreddit, when you return to the village in chapter three, there’s an enemy on a ledge you have a brief window to kill. Most of us probably didn’t notice and wandered right past him or thought it’d be a waste of ammo to bother picking a fight. If you kill him, no wolves will spawn.

This is demonstrated in a short clip where u/klyespelledcaio takes him out, opens the gate, wanders back into the village, watches the tower explode, and doesn’t end up fighting a single wolf. Whoever’s standing on the ledge lets the dogs out right on cue as part of the ambush, but in killing him, the whole plan goes awry.
You don’t have much time to pull off this strategy as he will quickly run away as soon as you see him, so your best bet is to pull out your beefiest gun and aim for the head. Succeed and you’ll save a lot of ammo you’d otherwise spend fending off the dogs, and you’ll avert the panic of trying to dodge them while escaping.
If he mutates into one of the broken neck enemies after going down, it won’t count and he’ll still release the wolves, so make sure he’s dead, dead.
For those trying to get an S+ rank onProfessional difficulty, this is a handy strategy that will save you plenty of time. Especially if you use the firstvillage ambush skip(where you shoot the church bell) andthe one-shot Village Chief kill. Less fights, less time wasted.
On the other hand, if you’ve never encountered an ambush of infected demon dogs in the village in chapter three, now you know why. You probably killed that villager not knowing it’d save you all the hassle. Some commenters did just that, while others prevented it on subsequent playthroughs, though they couldn’t pin down what had stopped the wolves from spawning. A few even thought it was because they’d shot a bird. Nope, just a pesky villager.
