You never know what you’re gonna get. This gnomic phrase is as true to a box of chocolates, to life, as it is the fact you never know when you might just stumble on a stash of rare and valuableMagic: The Gatheringcards in your deceased relative’s safe.

Over on theMagicTCG subreddit(backed up byreveddit), a user posted a request for information and advice. The Reddit user had finally been able to get into their uncle’s safe, after he died in 2013. They weren’t sure what was in the safe and had thought that it might be empty. Turned out the uncle had stashed a collection of valuable Magic cards in there. In fact, the collection of just six cards amounts to around $25,000 worth. It’s quite the find!

According toTCGPlayer’s market value, the finder’s haul comes to just shy of $25,000. The most valuable card by far is the Black Lotus, which is worth some $13,600. The next most valuable in the collection is the Mox Sapphire, worth around $3,995. The least valuable card is the Savannah, but even here, that single card can fetch $609 and is considered one of the best lands in the game.

Time Walk MTG Card

These are Unlimited Edition cards, which does drop the price slightly compared to an Alpha or Beta card. However, many of these cards – Time Walk, Black Lotus, and the two Moxes – are part of a group known as the “Power Nine”, which includes Magic’s most powerful and valuable cards.

Those offering advice cautioned the OP to be very careful, and warned them from posting the cards on local pages or bringing them out to meet those interested to others' houses. “You have a small home down payment there”, wrote one. “Do not make it known or put yourself in a shitty spot”. Plenty agreed and also advised not to take either the first, second, or third offer for the cards. Another nice tip was not to leave the cards in a car since heat damage can affect their value significantly.

“Assuming this post is real and the cards are real, and if the plan is to sell them, it’s definitely going to be worth it [to get the cards appraised] because they would very likely be appraised at more than tens of thousands of dollars”, wrote u/creamsauces. While the chance that the cards are fakes exists, many advised the OP to get the cards checked and appraised. An appraisal can be expensive, but as the commenter says, it could very well be worth it.

You never know what you’re gonna get. Just like when you findhundreds of thousands of dollars worth of MTG cards at your local landfill…
