The originalFallouthas gone open source, with the release ofFallout Community Edition. As well as making the classic RPG playable on mobile devices, it will also make it much easier to modify, with fan-made patches and quality-of-life improvements already planned. This comes courtesy of creator Alex Batalov, who backwards engineered the entire first Fallout game to make this release possible. Thanks to these efforts, classic Fallout could now be shown the love it deserves, with the first few entries in the series being largely forgotten by the IP owner,Bethesda.Related:Fallout New Vegas Has Better Medical Care Than The Actual USA"Fallout Community Edition is a fully working open source re-implementation of Fallout," reads the project’s description. It goes on to explain that the game comes with “the same original gameplay, engine bugfixes, and some quality of life improvements”, and that it should “mostly” work on other platforms.

This finally makes the original Fallout playable onAndroidmobile devices, with Bethesda never porting it to the platform. Since its original releases, it has been made available via bothSteamandGOG, with a couple of physical runs in 2015 and 2019. These tend to coincide with some sort of anniversary or new game release in the series, so it’s possible that Fallout and Fallout 2 will see some new ports whenthe TV show releases, whenever that will be.

In the meantime, however, we likely have a bunch more fan content to look forward to, as Fallout Community Edition will make modding more accessible. There’s already a goal set for backporting some improvements from Fallout 2, making the original game more inviting for new players. It remains to be seen if Bethesda ever plans an official mobile release.
