Octopath Traveler 2may not be a massive game, but it keeps secrets tucked away behind hidden walls and path actions, reliant on your attentiveness and patience while playing. Some of these hidden mechanics and pieces of lore aren’t so secret anymore, like Alrond’s 100x EXP bonus after being summoned three times in a battle.

Others, however, remain unexplained, leaving the fanbase without any reason for their existence, if there is a reason at all. Some of these details haven’t been noticed by many, skipped over, or forgotten as you chase after the game’s various endings. But each of these details adds extra depth to a game that thrives in its detail work.

8An Octopath Acronym

A detail borrowed from the first game, Square Enix pulled another sneaky move. To start, you need to take the first letter of each traveler’s name,Osvald,Castti,Temenos,Ochette,Partitio,Agnea,Throne, andHikari.

With the first letter of each of their names, you can spell out the wordOctopath. This acronym is a subtle nod to the name of the game and another way to link the traveler’s just that much closer together. Fans of the first game,Octopath Traveler, may be thrilled to see this trend continue.

7The Warrior Outside Ku

Justoutside of Ku, on a training pedestal that Jin Mei and Hikari could be seen training on inHikari’s Chapter 4flashback, is a new warrior. This one is just as eager to learn and take up the way of the blade as Hikari was. Fortunately, Hikari can teach him and help him to become stronger.

Themore you battlethis warrior, thestronger he gets, increasing from 1/10 strength all the way to 10/10. Even better is that he will learn new skills along the way, starting with a single sword attack ability until he learns the abilityCrimson Slash, allowing him to deal a powerful sword attack against all foes, followed by some fire damage, for an expensive50 SP. If you fancy that ability, though,Hikari can easily learn itafter you take the warrior down a peg or two during your last duel.

6Patience Is A Virtue

There are a small handful of quests that require you tohave patiencewhen completing them, such as theFish Filcherquest. Of course, there are no side quests inLostseed, but you can get some pretty neat items. Usually, when an NPC stands in front of a door, you can fight them or knock them out to get at their treasure inside, but that’s not the case withHollow Vessel.

The Hollow Vessel will not let you take any path actions aside fromInquireandScrutinize. To put it simply, the game is telling you that you need towait and seewhat she does. Turn the time to night and wait for a little bit. Eventually, the Hollow Vessel will walk away from the door, and you are free to plunder what little she has stashed inside.

5Infernal Castle Dungeon

If you aren’t curious to explore every area or you don’t know about asecret dungeon, chances are you will completely miss theInfernal Castle dungeon. This is of the most interesting dungeons in the game, and alevel 55one at that, and it would be a shame to miss out on it. Plus, it’s one of thebest places to grindbefore the final chapter.

To access the Infernal Castle dungeon, you need to head toStormhailand go to theBeneath the Wallarea after you’ve collected three NPCs into your party using Partitio, Agnea, Ochette, or Temenos. Once on the bridge, it should snap under your weight and drop you into the Infernal Castle dungeon, where you can fight theDreadwolfas your final boss and, if you play your cards right, earn so much EXP you won’t be able to breathe.

4Foreign Assassins For Hire

One of the Merchant’s best moves is theHired Helpmaneuver, allowing the merchant to purchase some mercenary aid. The skill doesn’t become an overwhelmingly powerful one unless you go out of your way to make it so. To thewest of the Merry Hills, you can fight aForeign Assassinand win over the loyalty of him and his crew with your strength and a fair bit of leaves.

They may be expensive to hire, at50,000 leaveseach time, but at max strength, they can deal9,999 damage with each hitand restore an absurd amount ofSP to every character. The fight may be hard, but if you can win it, the Hired Help ability can suddenly become a lifesaving move.

3The STuFfeD ToY

Although theSTuFfeD ToYis not a specific side quest, besides helping you gain more slots forthe Cleric Secondary Job, you can actually pry the “toy” away from this kid. Kind of. Just outside of Gravell, on thewest exit, once the time has turned tonight, you can sit and wait for the kid to appear on the ledge.

Make sure you haveTemenosin your party because he is the only one who can use a path action to interact, allowing you toCoerceinformation. Rather than fighting the child, however, you’ll be fighting the STuFfeD ToY, a shadowy elemental being with15 shields. This being is weak toStaff, Lightning, and Holy Light. Your best bet is to have Temenos equipped with a passive revive skill and to use his latent ability to Elemental Barrage until its shields are broken. Afterward, you’ll gain access to theSunshadow Staff.

2Mysterious Box Quest

TheMysterious Box questrequires you to travel around the world, but it is kind of worth it.It’s one of the best side questsshowcasing that Square Enix isn’t afraid to write some truly heartbreaking and creepy storylines. To start, head to theShrine in the Merry Hillsand all the way to the back right of the area, where you can talk to atownsperson, activating the quest. Use a path action to steal the Mysterious Box from him, which he will be incredibly relieved you did after putting up a decent fight.

Take the Mysterious Box toHouse Wellow’s Manor, just outside of Timberain and to the west. You’ll be greeted by some dialogue as you go, but make sure you’reheading there at night. Enter the creepy manor and return the box to its owner before heading on your merry way, a ray of sunshine in a house of murder. If you want some more context, make sure you stop by ahousebehind the first bridgein Timberain, where you can talk to a former maid of the family. You can also pick up aworn journalentry from thepergolain the middle of the lake, detailing the last moments of the Wellow’s daughter.

1The Crackridge Child

In the later parts of the game, after finishing every storyline, you should be able to find a small child near theeast exit of Crackridge. If you walk up to her, there will be no prompts for a path action, but you’re able to talk to her. Once you do, she will immediately beginrunning to the right, though if you follow her and enter the next area, she is nowhere to be found.

Some fans have speculated and searched top to bottom for this little girl and what she could mean or be connected to, but so far, nobody has a firm answer. The best guess currently is that she’s simply to remind you to go and check theruins of the Kal people, where now, you will find aslew of journal scraps, each one giving you more information on how the stories of the travelers connect. These scraps are essentialto understanding the story of Octopath Traveler 2.
