Mariomight be the one stealing the headlines right now following the massive success ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, butDonkey Kongplayed a big part in the movie too. The iconic video game monkey now has an even bigger role to play at the world’s most famous video game museum. Quite literally, in fact, as the establishment has unveiled a 20-foot high arcade cabinet on which the original Donkey Kong game – which even pre-dates Mario’s arrival on the scene, sort of – can be played.

New York’s Strong National Museum of Play is the home of the arcade cabinet which was officially unveiled on Monday (thanks,Engadget). Although it stands at 20 feet tall, the cabinet will still be playable since the controls will be a little lower than chest height, depending on how tall the player is, of course. It’s the rest of the cabinet, and most notably the screen, that has been scaled up for what will be the ultimate Donkey Kong experience.

“As part of our June 30 expansion, The Strong will create the world’s largest, playable Donkey Kong arcade game,” The Strong Museum tweeted on Monday. Even better, and for those of you worried aboutNintendogetting wind of this, the owners of the Donkey Kong IP helped make this project happen. “The game will stand nearly 20 feet tall and will be available for guests to play! Thank you @NintendoAmerica for providing input on the project.”

It isn’t clear how exactly Nintendo helped out, but it’s always good to know something like this has the studio’s stamp of approval. Nintendo is notoriously protective of its IP. It’s also unknown if the 20-foot high cabinet has set a new world record. While not officially confirmed, it seems likely as the current record holder is aTetrisarcade cabinet that stands at 16 feet tall. That’s three Toads shorter than the DK one. That’s Mario’s Toad, not the ones that live in ponds.

On top of unveiling massive arcade cabinets, The Strong Museum also has to determine which video games it will be inducting into its hall of fame this year. There are some strong contenders among the 2023 nomineesincluding Wii Sports, GoldenEye, and The Last Of Us. Those last two seem like likely candidates considering the additional attention they’ve been getting recently between the James Bond game’s revival on modern platforms, andThe Last Of Us’s massively successful adaptation.
