The Super Mario Bros. Moviehits cinemas today which means there’s going to be a lot of news about it and other things related to the plumber in the coming days. SinceMarionow has an animated blockbuster,Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto was asked when we might see him in a new adventure on theSwitch, and the director had a promising, albeit rather vague answer for Mario fans.
“Well, all I can say is please stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs,” Miyamoto replied, a cheeky smile spreading across his face as he answered. The smile might well give away more than the actual answer. There’s always aDirecton the horizon even though Nintendo doesn’t tend to confirm when they’re happening until a day or two before.

It has also already been effectively confirmed that Nintendo is hard at work on the next Mario game. Not only has it been six years sinceSuper Mario Odyssey, the last new and unique Mario game, but Miyamoto previously confirmedthe studio is always working on at least one Mario gameat any given time.
Miyamoto’s latest answer has simply reminded Mario fans that something new is probably coming sooner rather than later. Although it has been six years since Odyssey, Mario went on a new, far smaller adventure via Bowser’s Fury. Additional content tacked ontoSuper Mario 3D World’s Switch port. Three of the plumber’s previous adventures were also packaged together and sold to celebrate his 35th anniversary viaSuper Mario 3D All-Stars.
While it might be surprising Nintendo hasn’t tried to launch a game alongside the Mario movie, it really hasn’t needed to. Despite middling reviews out of the gate for the film, promotion for it has been fantastic and it’s currently tracking to comfortably make more than $200 million at the box office during its opening weekend. Now, let’s start talking about a sequel. Chris Pratt and Charlie Day have already made it clearthey want to see Bowsette and Wario on the big screen. Throw Waluigi in there too and I’m in.
