Mortal Kombat 12is coming. Probably. We know that publisher Warner Bros. expects Mortal Kombat 12to arrive sometime in 2023, and there has been an abundance of teasers as Mortal Kombatcelebrates its 30th anniversary. And we know that Mortal Kombat 12 will probably have something to do with time, givenEd Boon’s 12-tick-teaser from March.

Today we have even more evidence that Mortal Kombat isn’t done with Kronika’s Hourglass. At the end ofa recent videofrom NetherRealm thanking fans for 30 years of Mortal Kombat, studio head and MK co-creator Ed Boon said that the series isn’t “quite done yet.” After that, we’re treated to a brief cinematic of sand tumbling out of the Hourglass, with the final grain exploding.

For those who didn’t play Mortal Kombat for the plot, Kronika was basically the big bad of MK11. Using her powers over time provided by her magical Hourglass, Kronika made alternate timelines where Mortal Kombat’s bad guys took over. Only through the heroic efforts of Liu Kang and villain-turned-ally Shang Tsung was Kronika defeated, although the two would ultimately clash for control of the Hourglass. If Shang Tsung won, he killed Liu Kang and begins his conquest of the realms, but if Liu Hang won, he forges a peaceful and prosperous New Era.

Given these two irreconcilable endings, only one of them will turn out to be true. But which? Or perhaps neither? Since Kronika’s Hourglass can open up alternate timelines, perhaps Mortal Kombat 12 will take place entirely in one of these alternate universes.

We know very little about what’s to come in Mortal Kombat 12, but we do have a few clues. Ed Boon has beendiscussingKonquest modea lot, which certainly hints at the RPG-like modes return in 12. We also have a pretty good idea that Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series won’t make an appearance in 12 aftercomments made by Ash actor Bruce Campbell. “I’m not interested in loaning Ash out,” he said. “They need to come to our house.”

On the other hand, maybe this is all teasing an upcoming remake of Shaolin Monks? Ed Boon recently held a Twitter poll where he asked if Shaolin Monks should be remastered or get a sequel, and the fans chose remaster. It’d be pretty wild for Kronika’s Hourglass to bring back this obscure piece of Mortal Kombat lore, but if it’s what the fans want, who am I to argue?

We might not have to wait long for more news.According to an insider, Mortal Kombat 12 could be revealed this month.
