Each PlayStation seems to bring with it certain hardware innovations, some of which are more successful than others.Sony’sdebut console touted its 3D capabilities, with 3D definitely a chalk on the success ledger, while the DualShock was introduced a little later on (another tick). The PS2 had EyeToy, which was not such a successful experiment, and the PS3 a blu-ray drive.

When it comes to thePlayStation 5, the jury still remains out. While the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the DualSense got mostly critical praise, it appears that it and other unique features of the PS5 haven’t had the same impact on owners, according to a recent poll. Over on ResetEra, a pollasked: “How much do PS5’s distinguishing features contribute to your enjoyment of games on the platform?” More than 1,500 votes came in to answer the question.

These distinguishing features are the DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers and the spatial audio or 3D audio as it’s also known. Those who voted were given four choices to click on. These were “They significantly enhance my enjoyment throughout an entire game”; “They are nice and appreciated, but I stop noticing them after a while”; “I’m indifferent to them”; and “I actively dislike them and/or disable some or all of them”.

And the results don’t speak so highly of the features. With more than a quarter of the 1,503 votes saying while the DualSense features are nice and appreciated, they become unnoticeable after a while. While another significant chunk (23.2 percent) saying they’re indifferent to the PS5’s distinguishing features, and 13.2 percent saying they actively dislike or disable them. Overall then, putting these together, it seems the majority of the voters don’t much care for the much-touted haptics and spatial audio.

However, a decent proportion do appreciate them with 36.7 percent of votes selecting the “significantly enhance my enjoyment” option. While this poll won’t be entirely representative of all PS5 owners, and the OP might’ve influenced votes with their lengthy introduction, it may well be that the majority of PS5 players don’t notice the features. After all, not all games use them so well.

PS5 pack-in game Astro’s Playroom is a fantastic demonstration of the capabilities of the DualSense, with various gameplay aspects showing off the haptics and triggers, among other things, with the developers giving close attention to the full potential of the haptics as players can feel the rain and the texture of different surfaces, such as steel, via the DualSense’s haptic feedback. But this level of design is not found in all the games available on the PS5. Exclusives like Returnal and Gran Turismo 7 do a much better job of making the most of the console’s features such as 3D audio and the DualSense.

There are a great number of comments arguing every which way too, and you can read through them at your leisurehere. But maybe it’s just one of those things that are nice to have, and on games such as Gran Turismo 7 the DualSense really can recreate some of the feeling of driving a car, in this writer’s opinion.
