Amid all the hype forThe Super Mario Bros. Moviethese past few weeks, you may well have forgotten the plumber’s long-time rivalSonic the Hedgehogalready has two pretty successful movies of his own. So successful that Paramount has alreadygreenlit a third film and a spinoff series for Knuckles. The show has now started filming and the first details about it have been revealed, detailing that it will revolve around Knuckles training Wade Whipple. If you’re struggling to place who exactly Wade Whipple is, he’s the Green Hills police officer who is effectively second in command after Donut Lord, Sorry, Tom. According to the show’s official logline (thanks,Variety) Knuckles “agrees to train Wade as his protege and teach him the ways of the echidna warrior”. Well, if he’s going to be staying on Earth with Sonic and Tails, he needs something to do.RELATED:Shadow Should Have Been The One To Get A Sonic Spin-Off Show, Not KnucklesThe show will seemingly just be called Knuckles (because why not?) and filming for it started this week in London. Along with the details regarding who will be in the show shared by Variety, director Jeff Fowler shared an image of a clapperboard with a Knuckles hat hanging on it, further confirming production on the show has begun. Fowler, who directed both Sonic movies, will direct the pilot episode of the show and is an executive producer on the whole series.
Along with Wade Whipple actor Adam Pally, Idris Elba will also return to continue voicing Knuckles. Ted Lasso’s Ellie Taylor will also be joining the show, as will Rory McCann who is best known for his time as The Hound inGame of Thrones. What their roles will be hasn’t yet been revealed, nor has it been clarified if Sonic, Tails, and Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik will be making cameo appearances in the show.
Other than Knuckles training a police officer, nothing much else about the plot of the show has been revealed. We do know the series will take place at some point between the events of the last movie and the next one. That combined with filming already being underway effectively confirms the show will air before Sonic 3 hits cinemas. The third movie in the series iscurrently slated to release right before Christmas 2024, so the perfect way to fill the 18-month gap between now and then and continue the Sonic cinematic story.
Knuckles will be getting a lot of love in the coming months and into 2024. Not just because the echidna is getting his very own TV show, but also viaa Sonic Frontiers update that will make him, Tails, and Amy playable characters.
