This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise from a man that has starred in Jumanji and plays both Bowser andClaptrapin theSuper Mario Bros.andBorderlandsmovies, but it turns out that Jack Black is actually a pretty big fan of video game adaptations. Whether it be a big budget film or short television series, Black is a big advocate for bringing video games to other mediums, as long as they’re given the respect they deserve and are done right.
Speaking with theBBCon the topic of video game adaptations, Black mentionsHBO’s The Last of Usas a “fantastic” example of a perfect adaptation, praising “how loyal it is to the original source material”. Black then goes on to explain that he believes that there are plenty of other games he’d like to see explored further as a movie or TV show in the future, specifically pointing toRed Dead Redemptionas a potential candidate due to its great story.

“The Last of Us was fantastic. And what’s crazy is how loyal it is to the original source material. It’s basically all from the game with just a couple of tweaks. It’s going to win all the awards,” says Black. “They used the video game almost like a storyboard and I was like, ‘Whoa, this looks just the same.’
“And there are some great games that have yet to be explored in television or film. Maybe there’s going to be a Red Dead Redemption movie? There should be, because I think that [has] just as good or [an] even better story than The Last of Us.”
When it comes to potential video game adaptions, Black is probably right when he says that the Red Dead Redemption series would be a good one. Games made by Rockstar are always very character and story driven, more often than not focusing on charismatic individuals and their relationships with other people and the world around them. You could very easily see Arthur Morgan or John Marston leading their own movies or TV shows, albeit the casting would have to be spot on for it to work.
What you probably won’t want to see in a Red Dead Redemption adaptation isthis recently discovered glitch in Red Dead Redemption 2, which ended up with a woman miraculously surviving a shotgun blast to the head. Clearly miffed about her missing noggin, the headless woman then casually walks up to the player and gives them a well deserved slap across the face before carrying on down the road. Now that’s a power move.
