Once you’ve faced foes from all the domains ofNadir, you’ll be able to build the Caravel Wreck and unlock the game’s final character, Hernan Cortez. Hernan has mechanics that are entirely unique to him; you’ll never see another character or enemy summoning and evoking Wraiths. This gives the wicked conquistador strategies and builds unavailable to anyone else.

Cortez has the lowest HP total of any playable character, so when things go wrong a fight can quickly spiral out of control. Use this guide to master Hernan’s deck and defeat the lords of Nadir!

How Do Wraiths Work?

Many of Hernan’s cards allow him tosummon or evoke Wraiths.By default, he can haveup to three Wraiths active at a time; if a new Wraith is summoned and there isn’t enough room, theoldest Wraith is removedto make space.

Wraiths perform a single action when summoned, andrepeat that action when evoked.Evoking a Wraith does not cause it to leave, meaning the earlier you’re able to summon a full army, the more value you’ll get out of each evocation!

With a handful of exceptions, most cards that summon Wraiths are Blue, while those that evoke them are Red. Try tolimit your Blue cards to one- and two-cost choicesso that you can always switch to Red efficiently for repeated evocations.

Hernan’s Deck

Like the other characters, Hernan starts with a fairly basic deck. However, his unique starters - Warrior Wraith and Invasion - arenot on the same card, letting him use them in rapid succession. This lets Hernaneasily handle early enemiesbefore they can get through his Armor.

Invasion- Evoke the Wraiths once.

Most enemies start off with two Blue cards available, so early in the run the best strategy is tosummon both Warrior Wraiths, then evoke them immediately with Invasion when the cards flip to Red. It’s best to use the basic attack cards tocycle through your deckand flip the enemy cards to the side you need.

Best Cards For Hernan Cortez

Hernan uses a very specific strategy, so it’s best tokeep his deck as small as possible. If a card doesn’t fit your build or the coming boss fight, leave it behind. When in doubt, these are always good choices:

Depending on the boss you’ll be facing, it’s also worth keeping an eye out forTyrant, Soul Twisting, andRip Soul. While expensive and situational, these apply debuffs usually restricted to bosses and elites that can make your battles much easier.

More than any other character, Hernan relies on his Damned companions to shore up his weak points. Don’t be afraid to spend big at the Forge of Souls!
