The Witcher 3quest For Fame and Glory gives us an excellent case study about why witchers kill monsters and normal humans pay. In the quest, Geralt helps a pair of Skelliger warriors remove a necrophage infestation from an old mine. While it is a routine job for Geralt, it is a life-or-death struggle for his companions.

This quest can be controller-through-wall frustrating because it fails the second a Skelliger dies. The quest isn’t difficult because the monsters are dangerous, it’s difficult because you have to keep a pair of ordinary and untrained humans from killing themselves with their own stupidity.

Starting For Fame And Glory

You can find the pair of Skelligersjust south of Larvikon the island of Hindarsfjall in Skellige. They will tell Geralt thatthey are about to clear the nearby caveof its necrophage inhabitants. You canoffer to help themfor their safety and to start the quest.

Larvik is the same village whereyou meet Yennefer, during the questThe Last Wish.

The pair willenter the cave after the conversation, ready to enact their foolish plan. You mustkeep both of them alivewhile they clear two rooms of necrophages. The first roomconsists of several devourers and ghouls, while the second roomhas a lone alghoul.

If you kill the alghoul without losing an islander, they willthank you and pay you 60 crowns.

How To Keep The Warriors Alive

Odds are, you’ve looked this guide up because the two idiots die almost instantly, especially when playing at Death March. The trick to keeping them alive is toprotect them from themselvesand tokill everything before they can kill the Skelligers.

The most dangerous part of the first room isthe devourers. These monstershit harder and have more health than the ghoulsand willexplode into poison gaswhen killed. A single detonation cantake out half a Skelliger’s health bar.You should try tokill the devourers first, preferably before the Skelligers even get into the room.

A bomb sails through the air, trailing sparks as it hurtles at a pack of monsters. Some monsters are alight from prior explosives.

You cancast Axii on the Skelligersbefore they enter the cave. This will buy you a few precious seconds tokill the devourersbefore any harm can befall the Skelligers.

If you haveplenty of bombs, you should take a leaf from the first Modern Warfare’s playbook andhurl bombs at the necrophagesbefore they notice you.Mix Northern Wind, Grapeshot, and Dragon’s Dreamto immobilize, hurt, and incinerate the monsters long before a Skelliger sets foot in the room.

If nothing else, you shouldmake liberal use of Northern Windto freeze the monsters in place and prevent them from dealing damage.

The second room ismuch easier.Once again, rush into the roombefore the Skelligers can and startmercilessly attacking the alghoulbefore it can defend itself. UseAxii and Northern Windto keep it from putting up a fight. If all goes well, it should die before it kills anyone.
