The Island map can be a real challenge inResident Evil 4 Remake’s challenge mode, The Mercenaries. It may not have chainsaws or cataputs, but many of the Ganados have impenetrable armor and shields, and there are fewer safe spots than any other map. To make matters worse, skittering Plagas and hard-hitting Brutes can give the horde an opening to overwhelm you.

It takes longer to get from place to place on the Island, so it helps to always have a plan for your next move. This guide has everything you need to know about the map!

Island Layout

The Island map consists of the area around the anti-aircraft bunker, one of the most challenging sections of RE4 Remake’s main story. It’s divided into three sections: the bunker itself and the surrounding area, which includes a bridge over the lower area; the tower, which provides a high vantage point if you’re brave enough to climb it; and the gorge, which has plenty of room to maneuver but several points of entry for enemies.

Unlike the main game, there isno machine gun turret at the top of the tower. However, there is one at the far end of the gorge which can hit just about anything on the lower level or the bridge, and another across from the bunker. These have arelatively limited amount of ammo, so use them wisely (and no, Hunk’s Mayhem Mode doesn’t give them infinite shots).

Thankfully, enemies cannot use the machine guns in The Mercenaries.

Island Enemies

Soldier Ganados, complete with stun sticks, steel shields, and helmets, will be your main enemies on the Island. They also make heavy use of Molotov cocktails, so watch for any foes with lit flames! Swarms of plagas will periodically enter the map as well, attaching themselves to Ganados to create a dangerous melee threat.

Head-bursting Plagas aren’t as common on this map as they are on others, but you’ll still have to deal with them occasionally as well.

2 Crossbow Brutes

The paired Brutesusually stick together, so be ready to avoid their attacks, especially the clotheslines or hammer spins. One knockdown is all it takes to get yourself surrounded, and you don’t want that!

Item Locations

You’re unlikely to have much time for item hunting, so memorize these key spots!

Location

First Aid Spray

In a barrel inside the bunker, to the right of the main entrance.

Red Herb

On the floor in the bunker, next to the central pillar.

On the first landing as you climb the tower stairs.

Flash Grenade

On the ledge of the second landing on the tower stairs.

Boot Knife

On the ledge at the end of the large landing midway up the tower stairs.

Dropped by the chicken that wanders the map at random.

Island Strategy

The map starts you smack in the center, on the bridge. There’s a Ganado with his back turned ahead of you, but resist the temptation to eliminate him right away; instead, look aroundand note the locations of any Bonus Orbs. Almost all of their spawn locations are visible from this spot, except the ones at both ends of the ladder behind the bunker.

Plan out a route based on the locations of the green Bonus Orbs, since they’ll extend the clock. If there are any on the tower, get them first - reaching the top of the tower and coming back down is dangerous enough that you’ll want to do itbefore any Brutes spawn.

Once you have a plan, kill the Ganadoand enter the bunker. Get the First Aid Spray and the Red Herb, then get the Green Herb on the stairs to the left. This will give you plenty of extra healing, which you’ll definitely need.

Ganados can emerge from just about anywhere on this map, but the open sight lines mean that you canpick them off before they reach you. Luis is especially good for this, thanks to his Biosensor Scope.

The upper turret isn’t especially useful unless you manage to catch a Brute in its firing area; it aims downward into the gorge but has poor coverage, and it’seasy to get ambushed from the leftwhile using it.

The lower turret, on the other hand, is your best friend on this map. It can mow down even the thickest horde. However, it might be worthsaving it for the final pair of Crossbow Brutes; their autofire will tear through your remaining health if they get a clear shot, so you need to eliminate them quickly. Krauser and Hunk can defeat them at close range, but Leon and Luis will definitely have an easier time if they can deploy the turret against these pigheaded bosses.
