Hunters are one of the original nine classes inWorld of Warcraft, and have long been one of the most popular classes in the game. This is due in large part to their high mobility and exceptional pet utility.

Though different Hunter specializations utilize pets to varying degrees,pets can be an invaluable resource when soloing content.However, there are many pet families that require a bit of extra effort to unlock. These specialty creatures will require different tomes, reputations, and other pre-requisites, in order to unlock them.
What Pet Families Can You Unlock?
Hunter tomesare books that will either drop fromspecific bossesandrare elitesor may bepurchased upon completing certain quest linesand meeting whichever pre-requisites the vendor requires for purchase.
There are currently nine types of pets that can be unlocked with specific tomes or quest chains:

How To Tame Blood Beasts
This family, which is in the tenacity specialization, includes two types of pets that are commonly used by the Blood Trolls of Nazmir and areavailable to all hunter specializations.
Blood Ticks and Crawgs both have the core pet family abilityBlood Bolt.This is an ability that reduces the movement speed of their target by 50 percent for six seconds.
To learn to tame Blood Beasts yourself, you will need to travel to theAltar of Rotand locate theentrance to theUldir raid in Nazmir.
How To Get The Blood-Soaked Tome Of Dark Whispers
Uldir,Battle for Azeroth’s first raid, must be completed onNormal difficulty or higherto obtain theBlood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers, which is a guaranteed drop from thesixth boss,Zul.
Prior to your confrontation with the dark prophet Zul, you will need todefeat the first five bosses of the raid to unlock his roomat the centre.
Upon your arrival into the room, you will notice Zul is encased in a bubble of blood at the centre. To proceed, you will need toclear the room of any mobs.
Once you have defeated Zul, you will receive yourBlood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispersand gain the ability to tame Blood Beasts!
The Blood-Soaked Tome of Dark Whispers is account bound,so all hunters on your account will gain the ability to tame Blood Beasts.

How To Tame Cloud Serpents
There areseveral types of Cloud Serpents, which are distinguishable based on their appearance and colouring. Each type is also believed to have certain characteristics.
Cloud Serpents can betamed by all hunter specializations, and. For hunters of other races, they will first need to obtain theHow to School Your Serpent tome.
Pandaren huntershave theinnate abilityto tame Cloud Serpents.
How To Get The How To School Your Serpent Tome
The How to School Your Serpent tome is sold bySan Redscale (coordinates 56.6, 44.4) in the Jade Forestand is available for purchase for50 gold.
This tome isaccount boundand can be purchased by a character of any class, as long as they areexalted with the Order of the Cloud Serpent
How To Become Exalted With The Order Of The Cloud Serpent
There are a few easy ways to increase your standing with the Order of the Cloud serpent quickly.
If theDarkmoon Faireevent is on, don a Darkmoon Top Hat, or ride the Carousel toincrease reputation gains by 10 percent for an hour.
How To Use Pandaria Timewalking To Boost Reputation
Timewalking Events are a quick and easy way to level characters and boost reputation with the factions from the featured expansion.
ForMists of Pandaria, you will get theSign of the Mists buff, which applies a 50 percent bonus to all reputation earned with the associated factions, including the Order of the Cloud Serpent.
If you have50 Timewarped badges, which can be earned by participating in Timewalking Dungeons. You can exchange them with aTimewalking Vendor for 500 Reputationwith your chosen faction as well.
How To Use Onyx Eggs And Quivering Firestorm Eggs To Boost Reputation
Onyx EggsandQuivering Firestorm Eggswill offer you a 500-point reputation gainwith theOrder of the Cloud Serpent when turned in toElder Anli,(coordinates: 57.6, 44.8) at the Arboretum in the Jade Forest.
To turn in these eggs, you will first need to unlockdaily questswith the Order of the Cloud Serpent. To do this, you will need to complete a very short quest line calledWild Things, which you can pick up fromElder Anli.
Once you have unlocked daily quests, you will be able to turn in both Onyx Eggs and Quivering Firestorm Eggs to Elder Anli.These eggs are not unique so you’re able to carry many of them at a time.
Once you hitReveredwith the Order of the Cloud Serpent, you’re able to purchase aGrand Commendation of the Order of the Cloud Serpentfor 50 gold.This will increase all reputation gains by 100 percent.
Where To Find Quivering Firestorm Eggs
TheQuivering Firestorm Eggscan be obtained on theTimeless Isleby eitherlooting red eggson the ground or from looting thered cloud serpentsfound in the Timeless Isle. These are not a guaranteed drop, so the Onyx eggs are arguably a more lucrative endeavour.
TheTimeless Isleis a special zone in Pandaria where you areunable to use flying mounts.
Where To Find Onyx Eggs
Onyx Eggscan be found in theWindward Isle, to the northeast of the Arboretum in the Jade Forest. They are most oftenfound high upon the mountain peaks. You will likely be able to find several Onyx eggs at a time, and they seem to respawn every hour or so.
If you have some time to kill, it is certainly possible to gather enough eggs to raise your reputation fromzero to exalted in a day. you may find Onyx Eggs at the following locations:

How To Tame Direhorns
Though they are native to Zandalar, these mighty dinosaur pets areavailable to hunters of all specializations.
Zandalari Troll hunterswill have thenatural ability to tame Direhorns, though other races will be able to get them with the use of theAncient Tome of Dinomancy.There are two types of Direhorns that will be available for taming after obtaining the tome:
Their core pet ability isGore, can cause the Mortal Wounds effect in its victims. The Mortal Wounds effect reduces the effectiveness of any healing received for 10 seconds.
TheAncient Tome of Dinomancy is not account boundand will need to be obtained by all hunters on your account.
How To Get The Ancient Tome Of Dinomancy
The Ancient Tome of Dinomancydrops from Zandalari Dinomancers on the Isle of Giants,located just north of theKun Lai Summit in Pandaria. It is easiest to find the Dinomancers on the southeast side of this sparsely populated island.
Here you will find a few along the beach, but you will find many more if you swim out to theZandalari Warshipoff the coast.
You arenot able to fly on the Isle of Giantsin Pandaria, though you can use the flight master there to fly back from the island.

How To Tame Feathermane Pets
Feathermanesare a pet family within theTenacity specialization, added to World of Warcraft with Tomb of Sargeras. This pet family isavailable to all Hunter Specializations.
The Feathermane family is a family witha wide variety of petsavailable for taming:
Feathermanes have the core family abilityFeather Flurry, which increases dodge chance by 30 percent for 20 seconds. This ability is particularly useful when it comes to mitigating damage and fighting more powerful foes. This makes Feathermanes anexcellent choice for soloing difficult content.
To tame Feathermanes, you’ll need to get ahold of theTome of the Hybrid Beast.
TheTome of the Hybrid Beast is account bound, so you will only need to complete the pre-requisite campaigns on one hunter.
How To Get The Tome Of The Hybrid Beast
To get this tome, you will need to complete a lengthy campaign in theLegion expansion, but there are quite a few other perks you will earn along the way!
You will first need tohead to Dalaran and begin your Class Hall campaign. You will need to complete a series of quests and missions inTrueshot Lodgeto earn theA Glorious Campaign achievement.
You will also need to acquire theBreaching the Tomb achievementby completing theLegionfall campaign. The Legionfall campaign will progress according to the steps you have taken in Trueshot Lodge, so you will want to work on your Class Hall first.
Many of the later quests in these achievements require a character that isLevel 45 or higher.
Once you have both of the aforementioned achievements you’ll need to complete theNight of the Wilds questline, where you will receive your class mount, the Loyal Wolfhawk, and earn you the title ofHuntmaster.
Only after completing these steps will you be able to purchase theTome of the Hybrid Beast from Pan the Kind Hand,(coordinates: 59.0, 32.0) the Stable Master behind Trueshot Lodge for1,000 order resources.

How To Complete The Achievement: A Glorious Campaign
Once you have completed the introductory questline for Legion, a member of theOrder of the Unseen Pathwill approach you inHunter’s Reach, in Dalaran,and offer you a quest to head over toTrueshot Lodgeand pursue your firstArtifact Weapon.
Once you have your artifact weapon, you will be able to begin working on theA Glorious Campaign Achievementand complete a series of quests that allow you to increase the power and change the appearance of your Artifact Weapon.
You will also need to complete a series ofMissions using the Scouting Map.These missions usually take one to four hours to complete and will have a yellow banner with an exclamation point if they are necessary for your campaign.

How To Complete The Legionfall Achievement: Breaching The Tomb
TheLegionfall campaigntakes place almost entirely inThe Broken Shore, and most of the quests you need to complete will be given to you byArchmage KhadgarandMaiev Shadowsong in Deliverance Point.

How To Complete Night Of The Wilds And Get Your Class Mount
After completing the In Defense of Dalaran quest,Nimi Brightscale(43.8, 63.2) will give you a quest calledA Golden Ticket,in Deliverance Point. This will allow you to obtain yourclass mount, the Loyal Wolfhawk.
This quest will send you back toTrueshot Lodgewhere you will be able to locate aHerald of Odynjust outside the entrance to the lodge. They will offer you theNight of the Wildsquest and transport you to theFields of the Eternal Hunt.
Once you are at theFields of the Eternal Huntyou will complete a series of challenges where you will need totrack and locate several animal spiritswhich you will need to put to rest.
Use theTrack Beastsfeature on yourMinimapto locate these creatures easily.

The tome will cost1,000 order resourcesand be available fromPan the Kind Hand, the Stable Master behind Trueshot Lodge.
How To Tame Gargon Pets
Gargonsare a specific type of beast that can be found inRevendrethin theShadowlands.They belong to the largerStone Hound familywhich is an exotic family, meaning Gargons willonly be available to Beast Mastery Hunters.
Gargons belong to theTenacity specializationand have the core family abilityStone Armour.This ability is triggered when the hound falls below 40 percent health andreduces damage taken by 60 percent for 15 seconds.
TheGargon Training Manual is account boundand will only need to be acquired by one hunter on your account.
How To Get The Gargon Training Manual
To tame Gargons, you will need to acquire theGargon Training Manualwith alevel 60 higher characterfrom the rare bossHuntmaster Petrus(coordinates: 61.9, 78.5) inRevendreth.
He can be found to thesouth of Darkhavenin the ruined castle and has arespawn timer of 60–90 minutes.
His pets will do a fair bit of damage to you, so we recommenddefeating Reza and Geza firstto make the fight a bit easier. However, if you defeat Huntmaster Petrus first,you will be able to tame his pets after the fight!

How To Tame Mechanical Pets
Mechanical Petsbelong to theCunning specializationand were introduced to World of Warcraft during theLegion Expansion. There are a wide variety of mechanical pets available for taming byall hunter specializations.
Goblins, Gnomes, and Mechagnomeswill all be able to tame Mechanical Petsinnately.
Mechanical pets have the core pet family abilityDefense Matrix, whichreduces damage taken by 50 percent for 12 seconds.To gain the ability to tame mechanical pets, you will first need to acquire aMecha-Bond Imprint Matrix.
TheMecha-Bond Imprint Matrix is not account bound, and will need to be acquired by each hunter on your account individually.
How To Get The Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix
TheMecha-Bond Imprint Matrixis a crafted hunter tome and must becreated by an engineer with the Schematicfor the Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix.
This Schematic can bepurchased from Xur’ios(coordinates: 48.6, 14.6) in Dalaran, forone Curious Coin.
Curious Coins are dropped by bosses within the Legion expansionand can be farmed from rares, dungeon bosses, and raid bosses.
You will likely be able tofind the Mecha-Bond Imprint Matrix for sale on the Auction House.
Undead Pets do not belong to any specific family or specialization, and pets from many families can be undead. Hunters belonging tothe Forsaken will automatically be able to tame undead pets.These pets usually have the following titles in their name:
Undead pets are available for taming byall hunter specializationsafter obtaining theSimple Tome of Bone-Binding.This tomedrops from elites in Maldraxxus and the Plaguefall dungeon.
The Simple Tome of Bone-Binding is account boundand will only need to be acquired once.
How To Tame Dragonkin Pets
Dragonkinpets belong to theLesser Dragonkin family, much like Cloud Serpents. However, they have their own specific requirements for taming. You will need to acquire theHow to Train a Dragonkintome.
Lesser Dragonkin are available forall hunter specializationsand include the following pet types:
To tame Lesser Dragonkin you must beRenown 23 with the Valdrakken Accord.You will then need to purchase theHow to Train a Dragonkintome fromKaelstrasz(coordinates: 46.8, 78.8) the Stable Masterin Valdrakken.
How To Tame Ottuk Pets
OttukPets belong to theCunning specializationas part of the largerRodent family.They have the core family abilityGnaw,which causes theMortal Wounds effect, reducing the effectiveness of healing receivedby the enemyfor ten seconds.
In order to tame Ottuk pets you must beRenown 11 with the Iskaara Tuskar.You will then be able to start theA Chieftain’s Dutyquestline.This quest line begins with theA Lost Tribequest which will take you to theWaking Shores.
You will need to complete the entire 13-part storyline withTutaqanto unlock the ability to tameOttuk Pets.
Ottuk taming is account boundand will beunlocked by any characterthat has completed theA Chieftain’s Duty quest chainand does not need to be a hunter.
