If you’re playing God Of Rock for the first time, you may have noticed that its learning curve gets steep. There are intricate special move inputs, strategic reversal mechanics, and song charts that become harder as matches progress. However, if you take some time to digest it all, God Of Rock becomes a fun experience with a satisfying amount of challenge! These tips will help you get in the rhythm.
The Best Offense Is A Strong Defense
There are several types of attacks in God Of Rock. However, the bread and butter of gameplay are thebasic attacksyou perform byhitting rhythm targets.Whoever achieves the best timing connects their attack. If a player gets Perfect or Flawless timing on a target, they avoid damage altogether.
Considering the above, it’s clear that the safest path to victory is nailing your rhythm target inputs. Special, EX, and Ultra attacks cause more damage to your opponent. However, neglecting rhythm targets to perform a special button input will open you to harm. Meanwhile, you can chip away your opponent’s HP while maintaining your own by acing rhythm targets.

We’re not implying that you should ignore your higher-level attacks while fighting. On the contrary, Special, EX, and Ultra attacks have critical effects. Sometimes they can reverse the course of battle. Instead, we recommend you use these attacks with discretion.
Learn Your Character’s Move List Inside And Out
Studying your character’s move set is vital in any fighting game. The same is true for God Of Rock. Each character has a list ofSpecial,EX, andUltraattacks that you may activate with thumbstick inputs (⬇️➡️+ R2, ➡️⬇️➡️+ R2, etc.). Special attacks have a fixed cooldown period, while EX and Ultra attacks use a meter.
The characters in God Of Rock do not have as many moves to learn as in the typical fighting game. However, each attack has specific effects and conditions that will influence you and your opponent’s gameplay. So you must understand each move’s inputandfunction.

Another point to consider is that you must be able to recall attack inputs reflexively. Granted, this statement is true for any fighting game. However, your attention will split in God Of Rock, thus making your muscle memory extra critical. After all, you must stay on top of a song’s music targets while performing attack commands.
And what about when your opponent hits you with their Special attack? A fast recall can determine a successful reversal or a severe pounding.

As you can see, there are many reasons why you must know your character’s move list verbatim. Fortunately, you have several training tools. For instance, the Practice mode has aShow Special Overlayoption to display your character’s attack inputs onscreen. You can turn Show Special Overlay on via the Pause menu.
Use Directional And Face Buttons Simultaneously
Your battle interface displays the face buttons assigned to each track. However, you’re not getting the most from your controller if you stick to the face buttons alone. You can also press the directional pad buttons to hit rhythm targets.
There are several reasons toincorporate face and directional buttons simultaneouslyduring gameplay. For example, you’ll have two thumbs ready to hit faster targets like sixteenth and thirty-second notes. Plus, using both button types will help you memorize the control scheme, thus allowing you to hit targets without second-guessing what button you must press.

It’s also important to note thatyou can perform Special and Ultra attacks with left and right thumbsticks/triggers. So if you are hitting targets with one side of your controller, you can always use the other to perform attack inputs.

Focus On One Thing At A Time
God Of Rock’s mechanics can feel overwhelming at times. This is because there are so many points of focus! For example, how do you perform a Special attack when a spew of rhythm targets head your way? And what attack do you need to counter your opponent with a reversal? These questions and more will plague your mind.
If you’re wondering how to spread your focus across multiple gameplay mechanics, the short answer is that you cannot. That skill requires much time and practice. So instead, you’re better off focusing on one aspect at a time.

For instance, suppose you are heading for a tricky rhythm sequence. In that case, you must choose a focus that fits your strategy.
Defensive players may wish to focus on rhythm targets to avoid excess damage from a rhythmically inclined opponent. However, a more offensive player may break out all their special attacks, thus impeding their opponent’s attacks with more rhythm targets. Both choices are valid.

If you try to perform an attack input and hit rhythm targets simultaneously, there is a good chance you’ll whiff both tasks. After all, that kind of dexterity takes plenty of expertise to accomplish.
EX Moves Provide Easy Reversals
One of God Of Rock’s more strategic mechanics is itsReversal system, in which an opponent’s special move can get counter-attacked by a higher-level move. The hierarchy of attacks works like this:
Reversals have a small window of success. Therefore, if you attempt to input an attack based on the color of the inner circle (as the tutorial suggests), you may miss your opportunity. However, if you have one bar of meter, you can counter most special attacks with a push of the EX button.

Practice On Both Sides Of The Screen
Here’s another fighting game tip:always practice your fighter’s moves on both sides. God Of Rock is no different. Command inputs reverse depending on whether your character faces left or right. Furthermore, rhythm targets move from left to right when fighting on the left side. However, rhythm targets move from right to left when fighting on the right side.
While playing against a computer allows you to stick to the side you are most comfortable with, multiplayer matches will force you to become more flexible. The switch from left to right-sided gameplay feels jarring without practice. If you’re not accustomed to reading targets from the opposite direction, you’ll become child’s play to opponents.
The best ways to practice your left and right sides are viaPractice modeandLocal Multiplayer against AI. Practice mode will allow you to play on each side of the screen with zero consequences. AI battles will enable you to test your left and right-side proficiency in action.
Prepare For Overtime, But Avoid It Whenever Possible
Unlike most rhythm games, where songs have a set difficulty, God Of Rock’s rhythm charts become progressively formidable. Therefore, the longer a battle proceeds, the harder it becomes to win. That’s why securing a KO earlier in a song is preferred.
After a song’s initial conclusion, matches go into a period calledOvertime. This is a musical loop of measures with highly complex rhythm charts. You’ll want to avoid Overtime since it is the most challenging point of a song that will leave you open to damage when goofed.
Still, there are many cases when Overtime becomes unavoidable, especially at higher-level play. Therefore, we recommend practicing each song’s Overtime passage so you gain a knack for enduring Overtime when necessary.
