The Witcher 3side quest, Contract: Missing Son, can be one of the toughest contracts to complete in the game. In it, Geralt helps an old man search an old castle for his son. The boy had been recruited by a group seeking treasure in the ruins.

All Geralt finds at the castle are the group’s bodies and a large fiend in the courtyard. You will need to fight the massive beast, dealing with its dangerous attacks and magic eye as you attempt to kill it. With a relatively high minimum level, this contract will push the limits of unprepared players.

Starting Contract: Missing Son

As with many contracts in the game, there are three ways to start this quest.

Find The Notice

You can find the notice for this contract atRannvaig’s Notice Board.Reading it will send you toOdhen.

Talk To Odhen

The worried father isat Rannvaig, near the town center. You will be able tonegotiate your paywith him.

Encounter The Fiend

Finding the fiend at the castle will start the quest automatically.

If you start the quest at Rannvaig, Odhen gives Geralt some context. His son, Olve, had left with a group of treasure hunterslooking for loot at a ruined fortress to the south. He has yet to return.

Ride out tothe fortress in question,to begin investigating. You can also start the quest hereif you have not picked up the notice or talked to Odhen.

The ruins are also home to the diagram forMastercrafted Wolf Gauntlets.

Geralt inspects the corpse of a warrior lying face-down in its own blood at a crumbling ruin in Skellige.

The First Encounter

The first clues present themselves before you enter the ruins.A set of tracksand the gory remains of a treasure hunter are laying just outside. Press on, deeper into the ruins to come face to face withMorvudd, an especially powerful fiend.

Fiends aresome of the most dangerous monsters in the game. They areincredibly quick, much faster than their size would suggest while beingstrong enough to send Geralt flying.

Geralt’s Witcher Senses picks up a footprint left by a fiend near a half-destroyed castle.

One of its most dangerous traits isits third eye.It has abright red glowwhen open and willhypnotize Geraltif not stopped. When under its effects, you willhave visibility reducedwhile it charges at you several times.

There are ways toprevent or mitigatethe third eye from hypnotizing Geralt. Throwing aSamum bombat it willdisable the eyefor the duration of the encounter. you may alsorun away from the fiend. The eye will be unable to hypnotize Geralt beyond a limited range.

Geralt swings his sword in an upward arc at a fiend as the monster attempts to strike him in kind.

You cannullify the effectby drinking the right potions. ANoonwraith decoctionwill end the effect almost instantly.Enhanced and Superior Catpotions will have a similar effect, though consuming either during the day is inadvisable.

After depletingroughly half of Morvudd’s health,it willuse its eye on Geralt.Unfortunately, this isunavoidable and part of the quest. The monster will flee, leaving Geralt to track the monster down. The tracks in question are at thesouth side of the ruins,by a broken wall.

Cornering Morvudd

The tracks will bring you to another ruin in the deserted town of Boxholm. Morvudd has nowhere left to hide and willfight you to the death here.It will be restored to full health and will resort to the same attacks.

Try tokeep the fight within the ruins. It provides an arena with enough space tomaneuver around the monstersafely while keeping you close enough to deal damage. Leaving the lair will bring you intotighter terrainwhere its charging attacks are harder to dodge.

Morvudd’s lair has the diagram for theMastercrafted Griffin Steel Sword.

Once slain, loot Morvudd for the Fiend TrophyandLongclaw,a steel sword that you may know nothing about. You can findOlve’s body in the lair. At this point, you canreturn to Odhen.

Getting The Treasure Chest

Before you turn the quest in, you canfind the treasure that the group was searching for.Return to theruins where you first encountered Morvuddand look fora cave on its south. There is a chest containing300 crowns inside.

Youwill not be able to open the chest until you find Olve’s body.Even if you find it prior to this stage, you will be unable to open the chest.

The chestis prone to a bugthat prevents it from being interacted with even if you have found Olve’s body. you may fix it byFast Traveling to a different regionand returning to the castle.

Back at Rannvaig, Odhen takes the news as well as one would expect, paying Geralt his feebefore going away to grieve.
