Several of Zhang Jiao’s attacks are magical, specifically using Wood and Earth element spells throughout the fight. Check if any of your armour can be switched out if you’re having trouble with his Wizardry. You’ll have the aid of Sun Jian during this fight, but feel free to invite another Follower to help you if you’ve got Tiger Seals to spare.

Zhang Jiao Battle Strategy

Zhang Jiao uses a lot of magical attacks in this fight, but he has powerful melee strikes you need to block or deflect. To being with, he will call down Lightning either on your position or place them around the arena as a trap.If he’s placed traps down, keep your distanceand give them a wide berth.

You canalways deflect magical attacksto negate damage and debuff buildup.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Zhang Jiao uses a critical strike on Sun Jian

Blocking magic will always damage you through your guard.

Sun Jian will be the MVP here, keeping a lot of aggro and dealing significant damage. With Sun Jian in close quarters, you shouldn’t have to deal with any of his ranged attacks unless you take aggro from him. If you do, he might use his Earth magic sending outtwo large circular ripplesthat cover the whole arena.

These ripples willtrigger any Lightning traps on the ground, which will detonate in a small AoE. So long as you’re away from the lightning, you should be fine. Jumping over the ripple AoE is doable, but you shouldtry and deflect or block the rippleif you’re able to take the hit.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty - Zhang Jiao swings at our character and just misses

Due to this size, Zhang Jiao is easy enough to get behind. His swings are slow and predictable, and he doesn’t bust out any multi-hit attacks on a dime.Try to deflect any of his staff and claw swingsfor easy Spirit Gauge gain, then land a charged hit on him to damage his Spirit.

Zhang Jiao will use a line beam attack firing Earth magic from his mouth. This travels from right to left in a line.

When he does this, run to his right to get behind himfor an opportunity to rack up a long combo and deal serious damage.

Critical Strikes

There arethree main Critical Strikesto keep an eye out for as you face Zhang Jiao. He will use these based on how close you are to him and if he’s targeting you or Sun Jian.Critical strikes are telegraphed by a glowing red aura.

As ever, these attacks can only be deflected. The benefit of doing so is a huge chunk of Spirit Gauge damage to your foe, as well as breaking off parts of the boss. For example, you can destroy Zhang Jiao’s claws if yousuccessfully deflect his lunging criticalstrike, thereby weakening his claw attacks.

When you’ve got his health past the halfway point, he’llpower himself up and use a large red AoE.When he does this, get close and deal damagewhile he charges up. Be warned, you will have to dodge or deflect the AoE when it comes out, but if you miss the timing you don’t take too much damage.

Now he’ll use more advanced spells, like summoning Earth tornadoes to rip across the arena. Some of these stay and travel in a small area, whilesome will be fired at you in a straight line. If you’re feeling fancy, you cancounter his Earth magicwith any Wood-aligned lightning spells.

The main thing to watch out for is that hemight use a Critical Strike after he casts the AoE Earth ripples. There will be two pulses, and then the Critical Strike might come out immediately after, so keep an eye out for any cues.

Remember, you cancheer your Followersto give them a buff and prompt them to unleash a powerful Martial Arts attack.

Watch out for lingering spells and his Earth magicsince getting caught in the latter will either debuff you or outright kill you if you don’t have full HP.Keep up your attacks, and let Sun Jian take overif you take too much damage. Eventually, you’ll have triggered more than one stance break on Zhang Jiao, so it will just be whittling the rest of his HP down.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully stopped Zhang Jiao’s Yellow Heaven from rising. Is that a good thing? It depends on how you feel about the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Either way, onwards onto your next mission.
