However, the Onyxshard’shead takes a decent amount of damage, with its tail and hind legs making good second options.
The Onyxshard takes the most damage from Pummel and Lunge weapon types, like the Mauler and Bow.

ThePoison, Fatigue, Frozen, and Entangled ailmentshavemoderate effectivenessagainst the Onyxshard. While not outstanding, these ailments may have some success during the hunt. Meanwhile, theAblaze ailment and the Fire and Earth attributes are entirely negated, so avoid using weapons or skills with these effects.

Be sure to bring theCrate, Spring, and Glider Karakurito this fight. TheSpring Wall Fusion Karakurican be conjured using aCrate, Spring, Crate combo, and can helpdeflect the Onyxshard’s enraged roll attack. Additionally, aCrate, Glider, Crate combowill create anElemental Lantern Karakuri, which can help defend against the Onyxshard’s high-damage Earth attacks.
Onyxshard - Fight Breakdown And Moves
The Onyxshard will use similar attacks to the Goldshard, but oftenuses its attacks multiple times in a row. When you see the Onyxshard using a short, low-power attack, assume that it willfollow up with the same attack again. Overall, the Onyxshard usesmore Earth attribute attacks than the Goldshard, making theElemental Lanternand Earth defense armor more useful.
The Onyxshard will often attack bylaunching waves of its crystals to the front or back. Because of this, the safest place to be isusually near its sides, although the Kemono has several attacks that occasionally target these areas as well. The Onyxshard’s crystal waves can be intimidating, but once you learn where they land, they can be dodged with ease.

When the Onyxshardjumps back a short distanceor moves away to reposition, it will most likely attack with acrystal wave, so get ready tomove away from the front of the Kemonoto avoid it. The Onyxshard may also quicklyfire a wave of crystals before leaping to the side, repeating this processthree to four times. Get close to the Kemono andmove along with itto avoid each wave.
Similar to the Goldshard, the Onyxshard willcurl into a ball before rolling at high speed toward you, dealing damage along its path. This attack is most oftenused when the Onyxshard is a fair distance away from you, orimmediately after one of its other attacks. In either case, dodging out of the way at just the right time will let you avoid this attack whileremaining close enough to the Kemono to deal some damageto it while it recovers from the roll.

One of the Onyxshard’s easier attacks to dodge is itsdouble back-slam. The Kemono willlay on its side before sliding forward, attacking with its spikes. The Onyxshard doesn’t move too much during this attack, meaning you canavoid it by simply running a bit of distance away. Alternatively, if you canget to the other side of the Kemono, you have a few free seconds to attack while it moves.
If the Onyxshardslaps the ground a few times with its front paws, it will then create anearth spike beneath you, twice. These can be easily avoided bydodging out of the wayor simply running away from the earth spike. If you are behind the Onyxshard after the second spike, it willfollow up with a roll attack, so be prepared to dodge this, or move away from its back beforehand.

Occasionally, the Onyxshard willslam both of its front paws down at the same time, creating aring of earth spikes around itself, dealing damage. Then, it willjump into the air while moving toward youbefore slamming down with the crystals on its back, dealinghigh damage in the area. This attack is very dangerous but can beavoided using a Spring Karakurior dodging at the right time. Be sure tostay close to the Kemonoafter, however, as it has alengthy recovery timeduring which you cancounterattack.
After the Onyxshard has taken enough damage, it willenrage, blasting the area around itself inmassive earth spikes. While enraged, theOnyxshard’s crystals will glow red, and several of its attacks will be stronger.
While enraged, the Onyxshard’scrystal wave attacks will deal more damage over a larger area. Be especially careful when dodging these, as they can be deadly. Remember tostay near the sides of the Kemonofor your best chances at avoiding its crystals.
The Onyxshard may also createrings of earth spikes around itself twice, beforejumping into the air and performing its crystal back-slam. This attackdoes even more damage when the Onyxshard is enraged, so take care when dodging it. However, the Kemono will also need torecover for longer than normalafter this attack, so take this time to deal some damage.
The Onyxshard’sroll attack is also more powerful when enraged. Now, the Onyxshard willspin up for a moment before charging forward, dealing damage as it moves toward you. However, this increased speed means the Onyxshard ismore susceptible to being countered, specifically with theSpring Wall Karakuri. By conjuring this Karakuri in front of the rolling Onyxshard, you can fling it into the air, knocking it downfor a while. Use the Spring Wall Karakuri to turn this dangerous attack into a great opportunity.
