Unfortunately, those keys are held by Mother and Father, the bosses of the Blacksnakes and powerful combatants in their own right. Acquiring these keys from these individuals will prove to be an uphill climb, and chapter three takes Throné to opposite ends of the world in this quest.

Town Phase: Wellgrove

Throné will provide a short recap upon entering Wellgrove, reminding you thatyour target is Mother’s Garden, anorphanagerun by Blacksnakes who pose as nuns. In order to enter, Throné will need to don a nun’s habit, repeating the feat she accomplished in the first chapter.

There is anun behind the stalls at the town’s entrance. Use Throné’s daytime Path Action tosteal the Habit from her. After the cutscene that follows, take thesouth exit from Wellgroveto the first of two dungeons you’ll be traversing this chapter.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Throne in the middle of Wellgrove

When you enter this area, head directly south and ignore the path to the left to reach a chest containing aHerb of Valor. Now, take the path to theleft.

When you reach a bend to the south follow the path until it takes a sharp turn to the left again. Head right at this point, through thesecret passage behind the trees, to find a chest containing aStinging Dagger. Continue on.

When you reach the river, get into the water and grab the cheston the tiny island to get anInspiriting Plum (M). Then, head north and into the small cave to find a red chest, which contains aSilent Bandana. Thisprevents Terror, the status ailment that prevents you from using Boost. This is very useful for your more important characters and will be key in countering this chapter’s boss.

Return to dry land using the dock on the left and continue on until you reach a cutscene in front of the manor.

Town Phase: Mother’s Garden Orphanage

Enter the orphanage. After the cutscene, in which you meet Mother again as well as her accomplice, climb the stairs to the left and enter the bedroom on the rightto see a cutscene withMira, the girl that Mother just gave a collar.

In this cutscene, you’ll learn thatMother’s henchman, Morozov, has the keyto the back door and thus to Mother’s Garden.Use Throné’s Path Action to steal it from him.

When you are ready, leave through the back door.

Dungeon Phase: Mother’s Garden

The chest near the entrance to this area contains aHealing Grape Bunch- these are quite limited, so use them wisely. Continue forwards, but instead of going under the arch to the hedge garden, head all the way to the left to find a red chest that contains aCalming Stone. This is an accessory that prevents Terror. The game might be hinting at something.

Head to the hedge garden. The two chests in the ‘maze’ contain aHorned Helmand13,000 leaves. The helmet is decent - it raises the wearer’s HP by 100.

Press on. When you reach the row of arches, take the obscured path to the right to find a chest that contains aRefreshing Jam- this should come in handy very soon.

Head under the arches to reach some stairs and Mother herself.Heal up, save the game, and climb the stairsto confront her.

Thanks to the mix of weaknesses here, a very good team setup would be todouble up on Thievesand bring along aCleric, Scholar, and Hunterin some combination. Thieves will have theHP Thiefskill, which is fantastic for whittling down Mother’s Break Points, Hunters havePrecise Shotfor the same reason, and Scholars can targetboth enemies' elemental weaknessesfor huge damage.

Mother is backed up by an Aide, but he doesn’t block any weaknesses or anything - he’s mostly a nuisance. He can inflict Blind with hisEye Gougeattack and a physical defense debuff withShoulder Smash.Blind is very annoyingif it hits a physical attacker, so take him down first.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Walking underneath arches in mother’s garden

One of Mother’s most annoying skills isMother Knows Best, which inflictsTerrorfor a few turns. This can severely disrupt your strategy if it relies on Boosting, so verify you have theCalming Stone and the Silent Bandanafrom earlier equipped onto the two party members who most rely on Boosted attacks - these might be your main damage dealers, or even your breakers if you have a Hunter withPrecise Shotto take care of Mother’s Bow weakness.

She can also useBind, which inflictsUnconsciousness. Be wary of this, as it prevents a character from attacking altogether.

Octopath Traveler 2 - The Mother Boss Battle

Mother can also useLashing of Love on the Aide, which willboost his physical attack. It will also inflict Terror on him, but he can’t use Boost, so this is more for flavor than anything else. After Lashing of Love, she’ll useObey Me, You Worm, which will give the Aide the standard boss aura signifying a special attack. If you may’t Break Mother’s Aide in time, he’ll use Ominous Shudder, which deals a very large amount of damage to a single target. Luckily, with so few Break Points and easily-exploited weaknesses, it should be really easy to avoid this attack.

Focus on eradicating Mother’s Aide to begin with. This will take a bit of time thanks to the Aide’s inflated HP pool, but it shouldn’t be too troublesome.

Octopath Traveler 2 - Mother Boss Fight Ominous Shudder

Once you’ve damaged Mother enough, she’ll interrupt the battle to have adialogue with Throné. After this, she’ll useWhip of Terror, which will buff her whip with a purple aura that inflicts Terror with all attacks. This is where your Terror prevention will come in really handy. The next turn, Mother will buff herself - she gets a muchlarger reserve of Break Pointsand startsacting twice a turn.

Apart from her normal repertoire of hard-hitting physical attacks, Mother can also useElationin this phase, which grants her a physical attack boost and a physical defense boost. If you can eradicate these buffs, for example with a Warrior’sAbating Orb, this will go a long way to making the fight easier.

As long as you may keep your healing up, you should have no trouble finishing Mother off.

After the battle, you’ll witness a cutscene in which Throné frees Mira and finishes Mother off for good. If this is the second of the two chapter three routes you’ve completed, Throné will try and fail to remove her collar, realising that she has to go back to New Delsta to find her freedom. Otherwise, you’ll have to head to Montwise and take on Father to acquire his key.
