The rogue planet of Atropos will have you go through six different biomes while you play as Selene inReturnal. You have to clear a certain objective to get to the next biome, and this objective usually consists of defeating the final boss. Fractured Wastes is the only biome where there’s no final boss for you to defeat.

You have to beat Hyperion boss in Echoing Ruins to get to this area, and you’ll need to get three Hadal Keys to get past. Selene has to go through countless rooms with strong enemy waves to get these keys that will eventually take her to the Abyssal Scar.

How To Defeat Frost Drone

This will not be the first time you’ll see a Drone in Returnal since they were featured in the Derelict Citadel for the first time. The hostiles in that biome had many self-sacrificing attacks, but this is not the same for Frost Drones. Even when they’re on low health, they won’t throw themselves at you and explode.

With that ability gone, these hostiles also get a completely new set of attacks as follows:

Returnal Frost Drone Beside Frost Turret

Frost Drones usually spawn after you enter a room and reach a specific position. You’ll hear a specific sound cue whenever these enemies spawn, and you can locate them by finding the marker on the mini-map.

The personal attacks from these Drones might not seem lethal, but they usually exist in a group of three or more that can easily overwhelm you. It’s recommended to use the environment against these enemies to fight them one at a time.

Returnal Frost Turret In Shield

How To Defeat Frost Turret

Apart from the Abyssal Scar biome, the other five areas of Returnal feature a certain type of turret. You’ll encounter these enemies at random places during your run, andtheir attacks will get more dangerous as you progress through the game. Though the Frost Turret doesn’t have a lethal attack itself.

The hostile shoots three blue projectiles when it detects you, and these projectiles will drop on the ground near you to create an ice field. If Selene enters any of these fields, her movement speed is decreased massively. Being able to move constantly is an important mechanic in the quick and dangerous battles in Fractured Wastes.

Returnal Frost Machina Closeup

Most of these turrets will be in an inactive state if you’re far away from them. You won’t be able to deal any damage to them in this state, so you have to get close for it to get activated. You’ll once again hear an audio cue similar to the Drone spawning when they detect you.

Sometimes, you might come across a turret that is encased in a red barrier. you’re able to’t deal any damage to these turrets, and the barrier can only be removed with a melee attack or the Shieldbreaker alt-fire. This makes it necessary to get close to them. Moreover, you take some damage if you get hit by the blue projectiles.

Returnal Frost Kerberonyx Running At Selene

Ideally, you’d want to wait for the turrets to throw the projectiles, dash sideways to avoid the icy area, and then run to the turret and hit it. It’s important to get rid of these turrets before attacking the rest of the enemies in the room.

How To Defeat Frost Machina

Just like the other enemies, this isn’t the first time you’ll face a Machina in Returnal. This enemy was also featured in the Derelict Citadel for the first time, and they’re a common sight ifyou’re doing the Tower of Sisyphus. Though the size of Frost Machina is bigger than its counterparts in other biomes.

The rooms in Fractured Wastes can commonly spawn different mini-bosses, and Frost Machina is one of them. While it might have lower health than the other Machina, the attacks performed by it can overwhelm you if you’re fighting another enemy:

Returnal Fractured Wastes Fighting Malformed Severed-1

Because of Frost Machina’s low health, there might be times when you don’t even see its attacks. It only gets dangerous if you ignore it and fight other tankier enemies, so it’s recommended to get rid of this enemy as fast as possible.

How To Defeat Frost Kerberonyx

Kerberonyx are one of the hardest groups of enemies to go against in Returnal, and the Frost Kerberonyx is no different. This enemy can be differentiated by its purple aura since you’ve only seen these enemies with blue or red headsin the Crimson Wastes and Overgrown Ruin biomes respectively.

Apart from a unique design, these enemies also get a brand-new set of attacks:

All three mini-bosses found in Fractured Wastes can use the purple laser in their attack, so it’s important to know that these lasers can’t be dodged with a dash. You’ll still take damage even if you dash through them correctly.

To avoid damage from these lasers, you have to eitherjump through them or go to a different level to completely miss the attack.

How To Defeat Frost Severed

There aretwo types of Severed found in Fractured Wastes: Frost Severed and Malformed Severed. The Frost Severed is quite rare to encounter, but you’re almost guaranteed to go against multiple Malformed Severed because they’re usually the ones guarding the Hadal Key rooms that you need to reach.

Here are all the attacks performed by the Malformed Severed:

Apart from these attacks. the Frost Severed can also throw some purple orbs in your direction. This enemy is far easier to deal with compared to its Malformed counterpart.
