After going through the same biomes again and again, you’ll finally get the gear that lets you dive underwater inReturnal. This upgrade can be found at the end of the Fractured Wastes area, and it lets you reach the final biome in the game. You’ll find quite a few new mechanics in the Abyssal Scar biome.

Apart from having to get used to the high jump in this area, you’ll also be fighting multiple unique hostiles. If certain hostiles come for you at the same time in this area, they might even give you a harder battle than some of the bosses.

How To Defeat Anomos

Anomos are the most common hostiles you’ll find in Abyssal Scar, and this is a brand-new enemy that you’ve never fought before. You can differentiate them with their red face and a few tentacles floating below them. They will always be in a group of at least three, and they only have one self-sacrificing attack.

As soon as you enter the room with Anomos floating in it, they’ll slowly attempt to get close to you. Some of them might also be below you, soit’s important to keep an eye on the mini-map whenever you’re in Abyssal Scar. If you see a hostile icon but can’t see an enemy nearby, an Anomos is likely below you.

Returnal Anomos Dashing At Selene

When these enemies get close to you, their body turns orange as they charge up for a second.Once they’re done charging, they’ll dash at you at lightning speed. If an Anomos hits you with this dashing attack, they’ll deal damage and break apart, which is why this attack is self-sacrifice.

Whenever the Anomos is charging to dash at you, you’ll hear a distinct audio cue that sounds like a snake’s hiss. It’s important to have your headphones on and memorize this audio effect if you want to avoid damage from these enemies.

Returnal Shielded Abyssal Trichozoid With Selene

It’s also important to note that these enemies differ from theDrones in Derelict Citadelbecause they don’t break apart if they don’t hit you with their attack. If they miss you with the dash, they’ll instantly start charging another one.

You’ll hardly take damage if you’re fighting against three to four Anomos. The problem starts whenthese enemies spawn alongside another large enemy, and it becomes hard to pay attention to everything. In these situations, you can slowly back away to the previous rooms as you kill one enemy at a time.

How To Defeat Abyssal Trichozoid

You’ve never seen an enemy that does anything similar to the Abyssal Trichozoid in Returnal. This enemy stays in the same position and it doesn’t have any attacks that can harm you. Instead of a hostile, you can also consider this enemy a home for Anomos. The Trichozoid will spawn three to four Anomos every few seconds.

you’re able to tell whenever this enemy is about to spawn Anomos since you’ll see a red-black aura above its head. This aura gets shorter for a few seconds and then spawns the enemies. This hostile will stop spawning Anomos if a ton of them already exist in the room.

Returnal Selene Fighting The Abyssal Archonact

As soon as you see the red aura get small enough, start pre-firing above its head since this will delete the Anomos before they can spread out. Most Abyssal Trichozoids you’ll find in the biome will have a red barrier on them, and this can only be broken with a melee attack or the Shieldbreaker alt-fire.

If you don’t have the required alt-fire, you have to get close to the enemy, and this can be quite dangerous. If you let the Anomos spawn by it spread out as you’re getting close, you’ll likely get hit by at least one of them. It’s recommended to take your time and shoot the spawned enemies continuously.

Returnal Typhonops Charging At Selene

How To Defeat Abyssal Machina

If you’ve reached Abyssal Scar, you’ve likely had a fair share of Machina to deal with. In the previous biomes, these hostiles weren’t too hard to deal with when they were alone. It’s not the same for the Abyssal Machina as it can easily deplete all your healtheven if you’re fighting it alone inside an area.

Much like other Machina, this one can also teleport to a random location whenever it loses line-of-sight on you for too long. Apart from that, it only has one attack but this attack is a combination of multiple deadly things. Whenever the Machina can see you, it will regularly launch a bunch of blue orbs around the area.

With that,it will also spawn constant horizontal and vertical red lasers that will be based on your current position. There’ll be a type of laser every two seconds, and you’ll essentially see the area covered with them after a few seconds. Unlike the orbs, these lasers can also go directly through the walls.

It’s quite impossible to dodge all of these attacks at the same time,so it’s recommended to get rid of an Abyssal Machina as soon as you can. If you have your alt-fire ready, this is the perfect enemy to use it on. Removing this hostile will make your battles much easier in this biome.

How To Defeat Abyssal Archonact

Archonacts are also quite a common sight in Returnal, andthe Abyssal Archonact is the most common mini-boss in this biome. You’ll also have to fight this enemy when you’re looking for the Abyssal Key to open the vault. It can be differentiated by an orange color on its tentacles and a grayish face.

Here are all the lethal attacks performed by this enemy:

To fight this enemy efficiently, you need to dodge the first attack and then constantly attack it before it gets to do that attack again. The rest of the attacks can be dodged quite easily.

How To Defeat Typhonops

Typhonops is the scariest normal enemy in Returnal, both in terms of design and battle. The enemy looks a little likethe Titanops in Overgrown Ruins, andyou can differentiate them with their silver body and red light shining in the middle. This enemy also exists in its Malformed state and its color changes in this form.

You might face a normal Typhonops when you drop into the giant hole after getting the vision upgrade, but you have to fight a Malformed Typhonops to get the upgrade itself. Here are the attacks you’ll see from the normal version of this hostile:

This enemy is difficult to fight even at long range, but you have no chance against it at close-range.It’s important to stay far away from it unless you can time your dashes.
