ThePokemonfranchise launched in 1996 and since then, we’ve received numerous mainline games. In addition to at least one game per generation, there are also several spin-off games. With all of the Pokemon games available, it leaves us wondering, how many Pokemon games are there?

Here, we are going to answer just that. In general though, the answer is a lot. This will be separated into categories such as mainline games, spin-offs, and remakes. Thankfully, Pokemon is defined by generations, making placing a game in time quite easy. Now, let’s dive into all mainline Pokemon games in the franchise.

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s main character surrounded by a team of Pokemon.

Updated July 09, 2025 by Jacqueline Zalace:Chances are, you have not played every single Pokemon game out there, and that’s okay! There are a lot of games to keep track of; because of this, we’ve tweaked the total number of Pokemon games to be accurate based on the games listed.

Mainline Pokemon Games

For each generation, two mainline Pokemon games are released. These go hand in hand, and you won’t have to play both of them. If we are counting the duo of games as one entry, then there are 9 games in the series. If, on the other hand, we are counting how many total games there are, then the count jumps to 18.

Below, you may check out every mainline Pokemon game, along with its associated generation.

Updated Games & DLC Content

The video game industry has come quite far; if a developer wanted to add more to a video game, it would probably receive an update. This would be in the form of a patch or even paid DLC.

This wasn’t always the case though, as there are several early Pokemon games that received this new content in the form of a brand-new third game.

Below, you can check out all third games and additional content. We will make note if the content is a separate game, or just DLC.

DLC or Separate Game?

Red and Green

Red and Blue

Gold and Silver

Ruby and Sapphire

Diamond and Pearl

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Sun and Moon

The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra

Sword and Shield

The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk

Scarlet and Violet

In total, there are six games here, however, if you count Ultra Sun and Moon as two separate games, then we have seven.

Current Physical Total: 25

Remakes & Sequels

Since 1996, several Pokemon games have received remakes. Additionally, there has been one direct sequel in the franchise. Below, you can check out each remake and sequel for Pokemon. The grand total for remakes and sequels is six. Once again, if you are counting each physical game, then we have 12.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver

Pokemon Black 2 and White 2

These games are a direct sequel to Black and White

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Current Physical Total: 37

Spin-Off Pokemon Games

Lastly, let’s tackle spin-off games in the Pokemon franchise. These games can’t quite be placed in the series. Overall, there are a lot.

Puck Series (This is an arcade game series)

Mobile Games

Sega Pokemon Games (There are a handful of Pokemon games that were released for Sega consoles)

Pokemon Mini Games (The Pokemon Mini was a small console that only played tiny versions of Pokemon games)

Current Physical Total: 135

Grand Total

That was a lot of games! So, what is the grand total? This total will include every individual game released. For example, Pokemon Red and Blue will count as two games, rather than one based on the generation release.

If you count a generation as one game, then the total is a bit lower, at 119 games.

With this in mind, there is a whopping 135 Pokemon games! It’s important to keep in mind that not every game is playable, but this is still quite an impressive number. While many games have been lost to time or shut down, there are still 137 titles that have existed, with more to come.
