Sequels
Typically, Final Fantasy games have self-contained stories that do not rely on prequels, sequels, or spin-offs to see the full story. However, for a few games, this is not the case.
Final Fantasy X was the first game in the series to have this treatment, withFinal Fantasy X-2. This game is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X, following Yuna on a new adventure after the events of the first game. Then,Final Fantasy X-2: Last Missionfollowed shortly after, offering an additional sequel to X-2 as the games' cast takes on one final mission together.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Yearsis a sequel to Final Fantasy IV, originally releasing in an episodic format for mobile phones. All of its episodes were bundled together for later releases, which also includedFinal Fantasy IV Interlude, tying together the original game and its sequel.
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wingsis a pseudo-sequel/spin-off game to Final Fantasy XII, which is set after the events of the original game but is largely stand-alone.

Final Fantasy XIII had two direct sequels,Final Fantasy XIII-2, andLightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. These games directly continue the story of Final Fantasy XIII, forming the only mainline trilogy of Final Fantasy games, so far.
Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Originis a parallel universe prequel of the original Final Fantasy, following its protagonist, Jack, on his quest to defeat Chaos.

Including all of these sequels, ourtotal count of Final Fantasy games is now 23.
