Video games have come a long way, and visuals along with it. From vector graphics to rasterisation, and from pixels to polygons, not to mention the jump from 2D to 3D, games have been backed by technological leaps through its history. But that doesn’t always mean a game looks better.
For example, a PS3 game such as Resistance: Fall of Man might have been a clear graphical upgrade from a title such as Ratchet and Clank on the PS2, but it doesn’t mean the unrelenting grayness of the shooter is more visually appealing than the imaginative worlds of Insomniac’s platformer. This is exactly what gamers have been discussing in a recent thread. Over on the popular Gaming subreddit, commentors have been eager to discuss the topic: “What was the most beautiful world in a video game for you?”

The OP was clear to verify they didn’t mean the latest graphics but simply a world that looked beautiful. They mentioned the Egypt ofAssassins Creed Originsand Toussaint of The Witcher 3. The topic inspired many hundreds of comments, as many were eager to volunteer their favourite. While some big hitters were universally popular, and expected, there were also under-the-radar suggestions as well as blasts from the past.

Straight out the gate, Ghost of Tsushima became one of the most popular suggestions for most beautiful world. The open-world samurai action adventure has become famous for its highly stylised visuals, inspired by Japanese art and cinema. It’s a good candidate for what the OP means, a game that might not have the most realistic graphics but a vivid and appealing art style.
The Venice of Assassin’s Creed 2 was another suggestion that drew further comments. Of course it helps the game world is based on one of the most scenic real-world locations, but the historical verisimilitude of the Assassin’s Creed games felt original for the time. However, fantastical worlds can also be incredibly beautiful as suggestions for Skellige inThe Witcher 3and the environments of World of Warcraft, for those who saw it for the first time when it was still fairly new, testified.
Yes,Red Dead Redemption 2came up, with the rolling landscapes of the American West and south so stunningly rendered in Rockstar’s epic masterpiece. Players just wish the studio had done just a little more with such a generous map (considering the endgame expands out even further). Perhaps more left-field choices included the Columbia of Bioshock Infinite, although a city in the clouds will have some aesthetic advantage built in.
Of the PS2 era and older, suggestions came in for Okami, a Clover Studio classic that has endured for its original gameplay and stylised Japanese painting art style; the PC classic Myst; and the N64’s Ocarina of Time. It was a little surprising not to see more games of the 2D era mentioned, with the likes of Ecco the Dolphin and even Donkey Kong Country having vivid and atmospheric worlds. While Genshin Impact took a while to come up in the discussion, but that game’s success surely has something to do with its visual splendour.
But there will be sure to be many suggestions once players think a little deeper, and if you find your favourite is missing from the conversation you can always add your nomination.
