FromSoftwareis reposnsible for some of the greatest games ever made. Each one is filled with memorable locations with exquisite level design, jam-packed with winding corridors that intersect and open up to reveal shortcuts and all manner of horrible monstrosities to fight. Fans of the Soulsborne series have been debating which location has the best level design in the series on Reddit, and there doesn’t appear to be one standout answer.

The question was first brought up by u/FusRoDaL on the FromSoftware subreddit, and not much time passed before fellow fans were reppingBloodborne. Central Yharnam was probably the first ever experience of a Soulsborne game for plenty of fans out there, and it seems to have stuck with quite a few of them. For example, u/MotorVariation8 really enjoys how much Central Yharnam flows into itself so often, while u/OsoTico enjoyed the area’s cluttered chaos.

Elden Ringgets plenty of shouts too, mostly for the sprawling capital city of Leyndell. Not only is Leyndell probably the biggest location mentioned in the entire thread, but it’s also full to the brim with satisfying fights and hidden secrets. There’s also a great amount of verticality in Leyndell that doesn’t really exist in locations from previous FromSoftware titles, and it allows for a lot more exploration as a result.

Whether or not you agree its a Soulsborne game is another matter entirely, butSekiro: Shadows Die Twiceis also brought up by a number of fans, specifically Fountainhead Palace and Ashina Castle. u/RafasLeftBicep argues that Sekiro is slightly underrated for its level design, while u/Aobz18 really enjoys how much FromSoftware uses Ashina Castle, utlising the rooftops and even the ravine on which the castle sits. They also admit that while it doesn’t look as nice as a Leyndell orDark Souls 3’sIrithyll, it can’t be beat in pure design terms.

Of course, you can’t talk about Soulsborne level design without mentioning the originalDark Souls, and there are plenty that think Blighttown and Anor Londo rank among the best locations for it. For starters, u/kevaljoshi8888 likes the moment in which you scale the wall of Anor Londo for the first time and see its brilliant architecture shining in the distance, while u/Undava admits they’re “fascinated by Blighttown” and think its the best example of level design in the series.

We’d be here all day if we mentioned every single noteworthy location across the Soulsborne series, but I think the fact that we can even do that is a testament to how much effort FromSoftware puts into each game’s level design. Hopefully, the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will give us a few more we can chuck into the debate for next time.
