If you’ve been playingFortniteas long as I have, you’ll remember, a time long before it became a battle royale crossover juggernaut, aim assist and various tweaks to it were a hotly debated topic. While that debate has been mostly left in the past, a similar one may arise next week when the Lock On Pistol is added to the game. A brand-new weapon that does exactly what the name suggests. The Lock On Pistol appears to have existed in Fortnite’s files for a while. However, as revealed by Hypex and various other Fortnite dataminers this week, those files have been updated to give the new weapon an official name, description, and even a date on which it will arrive. “Specialized pistol that locks onto and tracks a target. Exceptionally useful during high-speed pursuits,” the weapon’s description reads.RELATED:Fortnite’s Unreal Editor Tools Are Going To Change Video Games ForeverAs for when the Lock On Pistol will be discoverable down on the island, the new weapon should be added via the April 18 update. Footage of the pistol in action has already found its way onto social media and you’re able to check it out below. As you can see, it won’t be as simple as the crosshairs seeking out an enemy and snapping into place. There’s an element of work to it, and also a 0.4-second delay between aiming and locking on.

That period of time is denoted by four quadrants that will need to turn from white to purple before you can fire with much-improved accuracy. You can only fire off a few shots at a time before a 0.5-second delay between those shots and being able to lock on again. Each shot landed will deal 20 damage, meaning even if every bullet hits, it’ll take a few attempts to down an enemy if they have full health and shields.

Odds are there will be quite a few people who love the idea of the Lock On Pistol, and probably just as many who don’t. It certainly won’t be the first weapon in Fortnite history that splits the player base. The Shockwave Hammer did the same thing, coming and going throughout the entirety of last season due to various problems beforeeventually being vaulted for goodwhen the season came to an end. An item with an entirely new mechanic like the Lock On Pistol almost definitely means it will have some issues of its own off the bat.
